Just got word of a fimware update from TASCAM for the DR40. The update allows independent gain settings for the XLR inputs. This is a huge development, as it makes the DR40 one of the best values in low-cost, handheld recorders. I love mine, but this firmware update just makes it so much better.

Firmware update HERE.

i've had mine for a few months and it has been able to adjust independent channels through the mixer mode.

That's playback level, though. From the manual, page 94:

This recorder has a mixer function that allows you to set
the built-in effect, stereo balance and volume level for each channel.

During mixdown (see "Mixdown" on page 91) and playback,
you can make fine adjustments to the recorded sound by
using this.

Read the documentation on the firmware update; this adds independent gain control for recording levels:

V 1.10 additions

You can now set the EXT IN input levels for
the left and right channels independently.

I've had a DR40 for a few months as well and, until this update, there has been no way to independently adjust the recording input levels for the XLR ins.
