Tascam DR-60D : How Many Settings Is Enough? :-)

I'm trying to get one in our booth for NAB, but we'll see. It's pretty new, and I don't know how many units they have on hand.

$350!!! This looks like a seriously competitive product. Basically blows Juiced Link and Beachtek units out of the water in terms of features: pro-level front-end with loads of preamp gain; lots of IO options to support many recording configurations; 4-track recorder; limiting; auto-recording, etc. The only downside I see is the size and relative complexity to operate. For a one-man band it may be a little overkill.

It could also double as a bad-ass field recorder with a 1/4 20 handle and two small diaphragm condensers mounted to the top or a Rode stereo video mic.

For once a DSLR product that is fit for purpose and will also be a useful add on for people using video camera's as well. ;0)

May even get one myself as it will then give me up to 8 audio tracks with my HPX 371 camera!

No-one seems to be talking about noise...? I got a Zoom H4n and was very disappointed in the amount of noise, even to my cloth ears. Much happier with a Roland R-26. I agree this new Tascam device looks very cool, but I'll wait to see some (independent) noise figures.

Sorry but in these days noise should not really be a factor and if it is you are using the wrong mic's with your device or putting them in the wrong place for your application.

A mixed audio track should have a fairly limited dynamic range and if you are recording noise floor that can be heard in the final production then you are probably doing something wrong.

Also note that on a lot of these budget devices and a lot of the camera's it is actually the headphone amp that is creating the most noise in the monitoring chain so the correct choice of headphones also comes into the equation and an awareness of where potential problems are coming from.
