Stereo always requires you use two microphones. Even a single "stereo" microphone is actually two mics in one case. A single mic is mono, by definition, even if you record its signal on both stereo channels. If you only plug in one mic and the unit is set to record stereo, only one channel will have sound. This is not peculiar to the DR-40, it's just the nature of sound recording.

Mine old hvx200 got two signal with one mic what is difference I think dr-40 has to give two signals when I choice stereo

You have to set the DR40 to mono record mode, which will record a single input to both tracks. Plus, you can set it to the built-in safety track mode to record an extra two channels at a lower level, which is a fall back in case the primary record channels clip.

I don't have mine with me at the moment, so I cannot tell you where in the menu these things are, but they're easy to find.

Thank you Alex
Both sides clear now
Do you also know when I plug the soundidvices mix pre on the tascam and the switch on Line
Do I turn off the phantom power of the mix pre ??

Not with only one mic plugged in. You would be getting a stereo track but the one whose XLR is vacant would be blank. With stereo, the left and right channels are recorded from separate sources positioned so as to capture the positions of the sound source. That means it requires one mic connected to the left channel, XLR #1 on your recorder, and a second mic connected to the right, XLR #2. If you set the recorder to "stereo" the left and right channels are totally independent of each other and if nothing is plugged into one of the channels it will be blank. Read page 53 in your manual.

When you use your MixPre you turn its phantom power on or off depending on the requirments of the mics plugged into it. Phantom on the Tascam is turned off when you are sending it a line level signal from the MixPre - the MixPre's phantom setting has no bearing on the recorder.

Thank you Steve you have right with the stereo
I tried out with the SD mix pre but its a very hot signal I have turn level from the tascam all down and still have mine doubts about distortion

When connecting the MixPre to the recorder through the XLR inputs make sure to set the recorder input to Line.

and also remember, even if you had only one mic, and it was defaulted to stereo recording. Yes you only "record" sound to one side, but the other side is recording silence, so there is no saving of memory space. You would still be recording electronic noise from the recorder, just above all zeros.

Yes I did that still to hot I'm now trying tape out signal from the mixpre connect with jack-mini jack converter.
Because the mixpre tape out is a min jack and I red that the input of tascam is -10 and output mix pre xlr is 4+ this to much...

According to the specs on page 114 of the manual, when the EXT input switch is set to line, the nominal sensitivity is +4dBu. This is a proper match for the MixPre's main XLR output. When you say the input is too hot, how are you determining that?

Yes I tried out and I must turn the level of the tascam all to zero and still doubt about distortion

Setup is :
mic to xlr mixpre --->xlr out ----> tascam xlr in
tascam is on mono and Line switch ..

CORRECTION
You were right again !

I just look at the switch and this was on mic not Line

Thanks you very much Steve !
