Tascam DR-10l in BH Deal Zone

How good does this sound?

Is it better or worse than this:

I'd guess the Sennheiser/Apogee would sound a lot better, but having to use it with your phone would be annoying? Can you just set this up at the beginning of the day and let it run all day? Is that the idea?

The ME2 capsule is not highly regarded by audio folks. It is usually included with a Evolution G 100 series body pack Tx systems. Many folks upgrade to better sounding mic and keep the ME2 for a back-up or for a hazardous situation.
The ME2 is not to be confused with the MKE series mics, which are very good.

Using a mobile phone for audio is one of those things that sounds ok in theory. Then you try it and realize there is a reason why everyone still uses dedicated audio recorders. Just like using a phone to fly your drone, control your camera,
as a video monitor. Can you do all of these, yes, easily. Should you? IMHO, no, phones are lousy a dedicated control surfaces, sound recorders, etc. I hate even using mine to control Go Pros and switched to a dedicated iPad.

Yeah I hear you. Apogee makes nice stuff, though. I used to listen to HD650s through their Duet interface and I liked it so obviously the Apogee/Sennheiser combination appeals to me.

The ME2 capsule doesn't sound that bad to me. Granted, I don't have the experience many of you do. But it's in the "acceptable" range. Would the Tascam be close enough if I can accept that level of sound quality?

I remember the Tascam D60 II I had sounded pretty good. Probably not as good as the Mix Pre 3 I replaced it with, but that had more to do with analog limiters and a better UI. But the h4n I found unacceptable. So my requirements aren't sounding "good" but sounding "good enough." I know that's extremely vague, but I guess what I mean is this is for use on smaller projects where a sound mixer isn't in the budget.

Just worried since replacing the mics on the DR10-L doubles the price, whereas I know the ME2 is good enough for my needs.

(I ordered two DR10-Ls during the sale, but can return them.)

I should probably just try it out myself, I suspect I'll be fine with it.

ME2 is my frame of reference–how comparable is the ME2 with the Tascam mic?

By comparison, the stock mic that comes with the DR-10L will make the ME2 sound like gold. It's noisier and has a weaker signal output... generally not a very good lav mic at all.

The DR-10L is handy to have in the kit (I keep one around as well), but is really intended for when wireless just isn't a practical possibility. You have a Sound Devices MixPre-3 (first or second generation?). That is absolutely a better machine that the DR-60DmkII and the DR-10L, and the Zoom H4 and H4n have always pretty much sucked as far as sound quality.

Use your ME2 lavs with the DR-10L, though. When you can, upgrade to something better like the Countryman B3. Yeah, it "doubles the price" of the DR-10L, but it will give you much better end results. When we're talking about $150 for a recorder, doubling that price is still relatively small compared to higher-end machines.

Thanks. I have the first generation MixPre 3 (is there a difference in sound quality)?

The Sennheiser iPhone thing has a pretty good ADC (well, I assume Apogee is good) and the ME2 is my reference for "decent." Would that be a better option? I guess the obnoxious need to use an app and keep the phone on kind of kills it.

To put things in perspective, I'm primarily a vfx artist. So the sound equipment is just about last on my list in terms of what I need and will mostly be used for personal projects, I'm guessing. If I needed great sound, I'd hire someone. On the other hand, I like working with a tiny crew for personal projects and not just because it saves money.

Edit: I like how small the B3 is. Not too expensive, either.

I am a fan of the dr10"s but its important to know the the mic bias voltage it offers is only 2v. The countryman b3 needs 3v-10v as well as the cos11's I like to use. The mics will work but according to sanken the output of the mic will be reduced.

The coming tentacle sync track e will have several mic bias settings to accommodate higher mic bias voltage needs.

FWIW, I am using the Oscar SoundTech 801s with the DR-10L and it works wonderfully and sounds leagues better than those stock crappy mics. Only $95.00 too!

The 4mm end-address Oscar SoundTech TL-40 is 'slightly' smaller than the B3. It is in the $100 price range of the other OST mics, but has a flatter response than the 801/802. (i.e., a flat response mic is usually not good for hiding under layers of clothes). All the OSTs are better than the ME2. I have not tried the updated ME2-II. I would not expect much improvement.

The 801 might be more to my liking then as I thought it was more common to hide the lav under clothes. I know I should just hire a sound mixer...

Anyway, I have both the Sennheiser iLav with the ME2 and the Tascam with me now actually so I will try to do some tests. But I will probably struggle to set levels appropriately at first so it could be a bad test.

That's exactly why we went for the 801s, we hide lavs under clothing. They sound great.
