Tascam DR-10 Micro Linear PCM recorder

Dingo, did you notice what the safety track level is set at or is it adjustable? And auto gain is it able to be shut off?

Sorry, I did not have that much time to play with the units on display. These recorders will be in stores at the end of November, so we should know these details in about a month.

Yes, you can disable "auto level" in the menu.
I have two Tascam DR10 units and they work perfectly with a Sanken COS11 and a standard Sennheiser ME2 (that originally came with the EW transmitter set). A colleague of mine however found that his unit failed to power his lavaliere from some other brand (which I forgot – I can ask him latter). Please note that the bias of about 2V required to power these lavaliers should be switched OFF the moment you connect the recorder to the transmitter (for monitoring obviously not the actual recording but at least you are able to hear textile rustlings etc whilst ignoring the transmission disturbances, knowing, after all, that these will not be picked up by the DR10 recorder). In that case, the transmitter will power the lavaliere, as it has always done, through the DR10 this time.

I purchased the DR-10x for my mke600 and love the ease of use it gives. Wish the gain was more fine adjustable instead of just 3 settings. Anyone at NAB please find out whats happening for us U.S. people regarding the DR-10cs as well as where Juicedlinks recorder is.

The DR-10S (locking 3.5mm TRS connector for Sennheiser G2/3 wired mics) is currently not sold in the US due to legal issues (copyright infringement) with Zaxcom. The TA-5 connector DR10 (for Lectro wired mics) is no longer being made.. However some folks over on the JW audio group state using a TA-5 to 3.5mm TRS adapter w/o issue.

Update:
Apparently Zaxcom has voluntarily withdrawn the copyright infringement a few days ago and the case was dismissed by a Judge.
ZAXCOM,_INC_v_TEAC_AMERICA,_INC
I would expect to see the DR-10S back in US stores at some point.

Thanks for the updates Rick but a moderator on JWs sound group seems to feel that Zaxcom defended their lawsuit and since Teac isn't selling the units in the USA Zaxcom withdrew the lawsuit because they defended their supposed patent. He feels they will never be sold in the USA.

With this news and no updates for a long while on Juicedlinks version it seems only our overseas brothers get the opportunity to have these as options in their bag.

I'm aware of what Jeff stated and that may be the case.
IMO, I don't think the typical G3 (low budget) user would be purchasing the Zax recording transmitter anyway. The TA5 /Lectro model is another story, but that was discontinued. So the only real winners are the attorneys.

Or is that like, illegal and stuff
I don't think so, some of the folks on the JW Group bought them from off shore sources and are using them with TA5 to 3.5mm adapters.. Glen may hire some Jersey boys to break your legs though.

Importing non US models was the rule for awhile when DAT came in because you couldn't sell a "non professional" (ie less than $$$$$) recorder that worked at 44.1k. The record companies were paranoid people were going to start making digital copies of CD's... While focusing there they totally missed the CDR market.

I tried to sell an old model glide cam on eBay once so i could buy a newer model Glidecam. My eBay listing was pulled and I got suspended because glide cam complained about my using their name in my auction. I talked to eBay on the phone to no avail, had to wait a long while before I could post it without the glide cam name. Well that was it for glide cam and me. I sold it anyway and I bought a glide cam competitors model instead. Glide cam made the mistake of thinking they were special. Zaxcom is making the same mistake because they were never in my price range. If I ever am in that price range I will go Lectro now. Companies that hold on to minor copyright issues, and this was a minor issue just like glide cams, as means of securing business traffic will always lose in the end. Spend that lawyer money on innovation and product value and you will have all the business you can handle.

Is anyone able to comment on the quality of the preamps of the DR-10X? I'm interested in purchasing one but have read a few places that it's kind of noisy.

Not the same, but I'm also interested in hearing about the preamps on the DR-10C. I suppose the preamps would be similar to the DR-10X. Any users who can talk about this?

I would expect performance like the regular low-cost Tascam recorders, which generally means they need a "hot" mic to produce a good noise-floor. So I would forget dynamic mics and try using a battery powered condenser mic with good signal output.

I own two Tascam DR-10S recorders which produce a low-noise recording when used with a good LAV mic. ( very similar performance compared to recording with my Sennheiser G3 UHF units )

Technically, I'm seeing a noise-floor of -75 dB RMS when fed a -50 dB test-tone signal from my Sound Devices MixPre-D mixer. You won't see a noise-floor this low with actual recordings because either ambient noise in the room will be higher than -75 dB, or the self-noise of the LAV mic is going to be higher than -75 dB.

The HIGH, MED, LOW mic sensitivity setting on the DR-10S is equivalent to -12 dB, -18 dB, -24 dB on my Sennheiser G3 UHF transmitter.
