Tascam announces PCM in-line wireless lav recorders & XLR cube recorder

I have a project this would be perfect for. People driving in cars and I cannot have a sound mixer in the car or possibly even within wireless range. Yes, no monitoring sucks but knowing how to correctly rig a lav also helps.

What a misleading phrase when it involves lavs: No cables, no wireless, no worries
Uh huh..and no monitoring.
Good luck!

There is a headphone jack, so you can monitor, you just have to be hard wired into the device. The Juiced Link recorder is exactly the same, except the headphone out times out.

It doesn't take the place of wireless lavs but can serve as an alternative & to me seems like a very nice tool for many people.

I agree, it's not "no worries" it's just 'no worries about wireless interference or drop outs.' I'd be worried about the lav rubbing against clothing or jewelry or other sounds like that, but it's great to put on something that is "bonus" audio and not audio that you live or die by. But then again, I don't think there is much equipment that is $200 that I will live or die by.

When it comes to weddings, you can monitor wireless, but you can't do much about it when there's a problem except know that you have a problem

When I have to record someone unattended with no monitoring, I always double mic them or place one mic on them and plant one near them, like in a car, one lav on talent and one on the visor. Had success so far.

I like the idea of double mic'ing. Especially for $200 you can get a few of these for the price of a wireless system.

And knowing you have a problem as it is happening opens the possibility of trying to find a "Plan B" solution (like hard wiring a mic or even placing a small audio recorder near the action). Finding out you have a problem 4 days later when you're editing & you're stuck.

I guess Lectrosonics is jumping into the small, non-wireless recorder market with the PDR. $750 ain't cheap though.

I bought a DR 10CS (with output for a wireless transmitter) from the UK and have a preorder on the DR 10L when it was $170. Not sure what there isn't to love about these. Are these a replacement for wireless? Definitely not. But there are plenty of times where I'd much rather use one of these than deal with a wireless transmitter/receiver and possible dropouts / RF hits . It's nice to have options.

If you are weddings shooter still using a Zoom H1 + Lav, I'd be running to these things. Still can't monitor audio, but a locking connector + dual level recording solves two of the biggest problems that can arise.

There are things to love about them and thing to not love about them. That's all. I like to hear the love...ESPECIALLY in a non-repeatable live event situation.

Yes indeed. I agree. But in a situation like a live wedding ceremony in progress you still cannot do anything about a problem that happens except sweat bullets and know that you have a problem since you can't interrupt the ceremony or change anything in the middle of it. But most other events you could scramble to a some sort of plan B solution.
For many years I was fotunate to have no problems using only wireless lav mics, but I now use both wireless and wired lavs just in case :)

I'm a sucker for all things Lectrosonics, but $750 is almost 4x of the Tascam or Juiced Link recorders.

Well, we all know this is probably a case of you get what you pay for. While I like Tascam, I have had two of the DR-40 recorders just up and died on me with no warning at around 24 months. Both out of warranty, both were just thrown in the trash as Tascam said at their repair labor rate, they are disposable. The DR-10L will be disposable and fairly fragile, I am sure if you drop it, it will shatter like an eggshell and if my experience is any indicator, it will die in a year or two. But for $200.00 that is acceptable to many, possibly even me for a few projects. The Lectrosonics will be built much better with higher grade workmanship and mil-spec components like their wireless systems. I think this is distinctly a case of you will get what you pay for. I have not tried the JuiceLink recorders yet but they will probably be built better than the Tascams but I have read that some of the navigational choices and options can be maddening too. A lot of it is how you look at it, a good Lectro UHF wireless is over $4K and this will sound as good or better, it's just not wireless. But I love Lectrosonics gear, it's great stuff.
