Tapping into audio system

Howzit. I am going to be filming a academic conference and some performances. They have an audio system but I was told the only way I could tap into it is through the headphone out jack. Is this possible to do with the dvx100a? If it is what kind of cable do I need?

I have a 1/4" to XLR adapter that has saved me a few times. You can get this at radio shack, then if you need to you can go 1/4 to mini with another adpter. Not prime way to grab sound, but it will work with fine results.

Someone said that sometimes you can mess your camera up by tapping into a bad system. Anyone have that happen? What can happen to the camera?

Make sure you set you camera mic inputs to line if you have to come out of the haedphone jack!

Re: Tapping into audio system

I have tapped into systems with my xlr input and mic cable. I usually plug into a monitor out plug. I have not had any issues, yet the systems I plugged into were fairly new. There were a couple of time I chose not to plug into a syaytem because I didn't feel comfortable with the person running it.
