Depends on storage conditions, but it is recommended after a tape is used every six months fats forward it and rewind it so that it stick, it also keeps the tape from wrinkling, and store them in an upright position. I haven't heard anything about new tapes, but it probably wouldn't hurt to do the same depending on how long you store it.
