Tapes?

What kind of tapes does this camera take? Is it a MiniDV HD tape?

I read an article that they were comparing this little camera with a sony F900 camera! Obviously with the F900 you can change lenses and all that stuff but if this little camera can hang right along side of the F900 that is going to be scary!!!!

Re: Tapes?

Yes it take straight forward mini dv tapes. Sony have bought out a "special HD tape" that cost quite a bit but I have never bothered and never had a drop out yet.

Re: Tapes?

Sony did release a tape called Mini HDV tapes... about triple the price which is supposed to be a better tape material vs regular tapes. I have heard people swear by them calling them a requirement... those and DVCAM tapes. I've recorded over 10 hours on my FX1 with Maxell tape in HDV and DV mode and I haven't had any dropouts yet. Until I "see" a reason to buy them, it doesn't seem to be worth the extra dough cause at the end of the day if you get it on the tape with no dropouts... the picture is the exact same.

Personally I would use standard SDV tapes and evaluate how long it takes for a drop out to actually appear. BUT I would have at least one of the HDV tapes for those shots which absolutely have to be done in one take and the higher reliability will then be worth it.

You may never see a dropout, but the potential for it to ruin a take is considerably higher if it occurs.
