Tapes and the DVX

I just recieved my DVX100A the other day, and taped about 4 hours of footage using the standard 60 minute Pansonic MiniDV tapes. Are there really big disadvantages of using these tapes and not the MQ tapes? Is it worth switching? If I do switch, would running a cleaning tape clean the heads well enough to avoic any lubricant issues? I don't want to play around with Barry's cleaning method just yet - too risky at this point. What should I do with the tape situation?

There's nothing "wrong" with the standard Panasonic tapes, but the MQs (and now the AMQs) are just a better quality tape. If you make the switch, you shouldn't have to worry about cleaning the heads first, because all Panasonic tapes are dry lube.

Yep all Panny tapes are dry lube. Be careful with those 83 minute tapes. the DVX manual says not to use them (page 23) Im not too sure why...but Im sure its somewhere in this forum. Only thing is the search tool wont accept 83, its too common, too long, or too short! Its easier too search dvxuser through google.

No. You'll be fine.

The reason you don't want to use the 83 min tapes is that the tape stock is thinner (to allow more tape to be in the same size cartridge) and can possible get tangled in the heads.
