Tapeless timelapse for Windows - Found IT -

I really love timelapse stuff. My dad and I once spent several weeks recording some Begonias coming out of the soil in a pot in his basement on Super8. We would run downstairs every 6 hours and punch the shutter release on my Canon 814 - drove mom nuts, but she liked the result ;)
I have the 100 (not A) and, as we know, its capability for this is not good. What I'd like to find is an app that will start/stop capturing to disc at just about any predetermined interval.
Hopefully someone here knows of such a program ??

*edit*
Thread title changed to lure in a Mark or two.. :)

Re: Tapeless timelapse through software ??

Yup, that one pretty much does what I asked for, except that I forgot to mention I don't have an Apple box - my bad.
For the record I need a Windows app.
Thanks for the effort though, Taylor. :)

Re: Tapeless timelapse through software ??

How quickly do you need it (or how much non-user-friendly can you stand)?

I wrote a Windows utility that is half the solution.  It will capture, at intervals, anything that's on the screen.

If you have something else that will throw the image up on the monitor (lke your editor, or capture card), then this will take snapshots of it as BMPs or JPGs, saving them to disk with sequential filenames.

However, if the "viewers" you have use DirectX, I don't think it will work, since their images aren't really on the desktop.  At least, I've never been able to capture from them using any software.  (Mostly talking about DVD players here)

Easy way to check: focus the viewer and do an ALT-PrtScn (print screen), then paste it into Photoshop/PaintShop/MSPaint/Whatever. If the image shows up, my utility will be able to capture from that viewer.

It will not cap from DV Rack. I just tested it. :(

Re: Tapeless timelapse through software ??

GenJerDan, I like the idea of a screen cap. Way too bad it doesn't work with DVRack. Actually after I started this thread I was wondering how hard it would be to create a plugin for DVRack that could do intervalometer work directly to disk. I think that would be a near perfect solution. Since you obviously know a heck of a lot more about writing code than I, what do think of this idea? I'm not suggesting that you should do it, just looking for your (or anyones) thoughts on feasability.

Scharky, Thanks.
I did what I thought was a pretty thorough search and looked closely at scenalyzer. The thing about it that doesn't fit well is the fact that recording is done in realtime. Then, I assume here, frames are chopped to produce the desired effect. I really want to avoid going to tape or disk and then trashing 90+% of it. My interest is mainly in long term (days or even weeks) time compression and I just cannot afford those muti-terrabite drives. But I could be misunderstanding the way the app works ..?
Thanks!

Wouldn't need a new plugin. They could add about 20 lines of code to the DV Grabber module to do it. :) Are the Marks here, listening? Sound like a good idea?

You really think it would be that easy? That could be another selling point. Mark(s), where are ya man/men??
This could be one of those 'sounds to good to be true' things they warned me about though. :D

Re: Tapeless timelapse through software ??

Heck, yeah. Drop in a timer, a spinedit to set the interval, and a filename/directory selector. Some code to sequence the filenames and you're done. :)

Oh Eric, some of those are very interesting - and free too!
Thanks for the pointer, I'll look closer later today.

Re: Tapeless timelapse through DVRack - seriously?

Dan,
Awhile back I was looking for an alarm/calendar app and found this one to be very useful. http://www.kirbyfooty.com/html/kirby_alarm.html. The alarm configuration would be ideal for intervalometry if only it could resolve seconds too, and be disabled during certain times (darkness, weekends, etc.)
Also, if you hadn't noticed, I changed the title of the thread..

Re: Tapeless timelapse through DVRack - seriously?

we regularily do DVD for a building company. they simply set up a webcam when making big houses and apparently these have a timelapse option, cos we get a photo a day. looks cool to see a field grow into concrete...NOT

Re: Tapeless timelapse through DVRack - seriously?

A time lapse feature has been on our list since before we released DV Rack back in August. Our development efforts are currently focused on another far more substantial breakthrough for this product, which is going into beta testing any day now. (Let your imaginations run wild.) I'm hopeful that when that new release is out the door, we'll pick eight or ten new features like time release to implement.

Re: Tapeless timelapse through DVRack - seriously?

Re: Tapeless timelapse through DVRack - seriously?

is the new feature a full resolution display?  please say it is so.  I just got DV rack express, and while I think it is a great program the lack of a full res display, especially in progressive scan really dissapoints me, especially when considering that the vegas capture program can do it with ease.  Please say it IS so.

BTW, sorry to hijack the thread, please go back to talking about timelaps :-[

Re: Tapeless timelapse through DVRack - seriously?

Mark,
Thanks for the promising report. Too bad interval recording is going to be late on the scene though.

Could you please address the following questions if you're able?
1) Will system requirements differ for the new release?
2) Can you tell Scharky it is so? I think all of us would be happier if it is.
3) Please tell us we will be able to resize rack components.
4) Do you need beta testers? I can be available and do have some experience.
5) Will this be a free update or a purchased upgrade?

Thanks again for the reply.

I'm not at liberty to divulge any details. If MarkRan happens along, he most assuredly has the authority to elaborate at will. In any case, public announcement is not far off.

Soliton: I'll extend your offer to be a beta tester to the project manager here.

:(
I sure though I'd be able to find a way to timelapse straight to disk with Windows software. Could be I'm not looking hard enough or using the correct search paramenters. I'm not giving up just yet and will post here if anything promising shows up.

Thanks for all your help!

Re: Tapeless timelapse for Windows - Found IT -

If you have an interest in timelapse or recording realtime direct to disk, check this out.
After considerable research, I think this may be the only app of it's kind for Windows machines. I've been testing with the DVX. This is a quite amazing app. It captures realtime and timelapse. It has several compression schemes and captures frames or images. I don't yet know the maximum interval but it looks like it will go at least 24hrs. There is a 15 day fully functional trial period, $39 to buy.

I am having a problem capturing with a couple of scene files.
