Tape Question

I have just joined this forum, which even though I am a DVC-80 user I find to be amazing source of info. I use AY-DVM60 tapes and I have several tapes still sealed in their original packaging that I have had for about 18 months. Do tapes have any known shelf life, or can they be used safely after this amount of time? I know that they should be fast-forwarded and rewound before use, but what about other deterioration?
