Is it detrimental to leave the 100A "tape protect" mode set in "Standby" as opposed to the off position?

Not at all. I prefer it, actually. Standby will disengage the tape transport until you hit record, but the camera will stay powered up. That way, you can still set up your shot, but you're not putting wear and tear on your heads or the tape.
