tape dump

Hi guys. Here is my scenario.

This guy from my town shot a bunch of footage (@5-6 tapes) on an FX-1 that he rented last year. He said one of his harddrives crashed and he needs to digitize the tapes again. He would like to use my fx-1 that I'm getting in next week.

The shooting was all done in SD. Can't he use any minidv camcorder to use as a playback for the digitizing? Is it nessasary to be using an FX-1? I don't mind helping him out but I'd rather not use my brand new camcorder to start running old tape. As for myself, that was going to be my plan too..buy a crap minidv cam from Costo and use it for playback until it breaks..then bring it back for a new one.

Any insight would be great. Thanks guys.

Okay I'm a bit confused in your answers. My real question I have is....

If I don't want to lend this kid my camera can I just tell him to get any minidv cam and use it? Will that work if the tapes were shot in SD on the fx1? Can he just go and get any old camera and digitize with it instead?
Thanks.

Yes -- if he shot SD/DV on the FX1, then any miniDV camera can play it back.

If instead he shot HDV and wants to digitize it to DV using the in-camera downconversion feature, that's a scenario where it would require using another FX1 for playback.

Thanks Barry:) I don't trust this kid..one of those slimy film school grads who I think is trying to make artsy soft porn films. Yuck.
