Hi I am suppose to get my DVX in the mail today (i pray) and i was wondering how bad is it really to use the rew. and ff buttons? I hear everybody say that they NEVER use the rewind/f-forward on their cam. Why is this? Is it safe to record back on to tape after your done editing or should you use a tapedeck for that too?

P.S. Can't i just use a T.V. as a monitor or must i get a specific editing monitor? Whats the difference?

thanks alot guys

We all try to minimize wear and tear on any camcorder. The tape mecanism on most camcorders are not as robust as a deck's; and is probably the weakest link on the whole camcoder. Since we want to keep the camera as long as possible, there are a few things one must do to minimize wear.

Occasional use will not be a problem (used once a week or so), but constant daily use of the tape mecanism is a problem to happen. Most of us try to use the tape mecanism on the camcorder only for recording. I have a rewinder to rewind my tapes, and use the deck, whenever I can grab a hold of it (we are a few to use it), to digitize the footage.

As for viewing footage while editing, saving undue wear on the electrical components (and the hour meter running up too high), I use a $300 Canopus ADVC100 bidirectional DV to analog converter.

In short, my camera always stays in its case, except when I'm shooting.
