talk to me about Film out and a camera to grow with

This is quite important for a lot of us here,
I didn't get to see the HVX film out projection last month,
but for those of you who did, please chime in.

I am alright with the lower res of this camera if the Film out works and works well,
Pany has a warmth to it that I want.

I also want to be using a 35mm adaptor, which softens the image, and this could push the HVX out of the picture
and it brings the Canon H1 back into the picture...

The HVX is purfect for my work flow, whereas the H1 will require more $$ to stabilize the workflow, but
It seems to be a camera that I can grow with, whereas the HVX, seems like it has some basic image constraints...

Nobody be getting mad now.
I am leaning towards th HVX but trying to make an informed decision.

Final output to the larger screen is the big question
advice,
consolation,
propaganda and information is all welcome

thanks,

More rez is always better for film out but unless you are doing it SPECIFICALLY for a film out I would not worry about it because the only hope of ever getting it to film is if the subject is so compelling it would trump the format on which it was acquired.

MOST, not some, MOST low-budgeted features ($500k to $5mil) SHOT on film never make it to a film print for theaters. Many of those that do have a very limited release and/or a fairly short run. Why focus on creating something specifically for the distribution method that is the most unlikely and the most short lived? The most you can hope is that you have a 4-6 week run but your work will live FOREVER on DVD, HD-DVD, etc. etc. etc.

If you were doing a project that you knew was going to film, I would say the XLH1 is the better choice right now... still too early but it looks like it will have more resolution. Ask most DPs who have done digital for features and even though many prefer the Varicam, they almost ALL use F900s for film out... one reason... more rez...

Thanks Ash,
I will be using this for a wide array of different projects and I want to be able to have the utmost distributional range.
Your comments are very appreciated. I agree.
More Res is "better"
but I have a feeling the Feeling of the HVX (like the DVX) will be better

Actuallly this point may be mute.

The res I really care about is in 24p and it look like HVX and H1 ar both quite similar @ 24f & 24p1080

C'est Vrai?

(although, for Film output it's best to record at 1080/60 ?

Wont harp on this too much more, I promise,

From what I heard the HDV encoding used in cameras like the XLH1 has a possibility of causing problems with 35mm adapters. I know for certain the the JVC has been known for this. THe rotating ground class casues havoc with the encoding. If you are looking to use 35mm adapters HDV might not be your best choice.

Best case scenario is most likely XLH via HD-SDI... also not cheap though. The XLH appears to have 10%+ more rez even in 24F... That being said, dont trust everything you read. People inherently have bias and while their data may be accurate, the tests are often set up to show the best case for a certain camera or accentuate the sweet spot of the electronics, etc.

interesting, thanks
here is the G35 I think it's a static adapter

Thanks again Ash,
I will Not be doing SDI
So the 24p/f modes on each camera are quite similar in Resolution.
That is good to know because That is what I will be mostly shooting in.
(though 1080 is better for blow up and the Canon is a lot better in 1080)

you are right, each forum I visit is so biased that I have to go back and forth to achieve any balance.
That being said, I think this forum rocks
and while we might tend to sweep a bit of stuff under the carpet
(because we have all been waiting So Long imagining the everything camera)
I think we are reallly trying to get to the bottom of this camera.

I fear Noise and Grain, the Canon seems to do real well in Low light,
but if the 24Pf is basically equivalent in Res...
That might do it for me

Not necessary so expensive either, if you can accept tether and AC electricity needed.
You can buy terabyte of hard disk with a price of gigabyte of P2.
