Taking my HVX into China....problems?

So I just got a gig filming some interviews in Beijing and will be lugging my HVX over there with me. Going to pack it in my Pelican 1510 case for carry on. But I'm slightly worried about over zealous customs in China seeing a professional camera. I've heard that filming anything is highly controlled there for policitcal reasons, and I don't want them to confiscate it. The job I'm doing is not political, and we will not be shooting in public spaces. Any advice?

Depends. Just don't declare yourself a journalist, and you should be ok. What's your GIG about?

If its a non-political gig, you should contact the Chinese embassy\consulate in your area and describe your gig and what's about. Shouldn't be a problem at all.

Chill, Dude....

I recently spent 6 weeks there and poked my HVX at 'everything and anything' from Shanghi to Beijing to Xian to Tibet to Hong Kong and they i.e. the Authorities didn't bat an eyelid at anything.

I started off being 'concerned' at filming in Tiananmen Sq. but the soldiers/police who where in shot just ended up looking away from the camera. If I get time I'll post some footage in a way it looks quite funny!

I think that we here in the West have spent too much time demonising certain contries... the people are wonderfull friendly and you'll have a great time!

Indy....

People are friendly, yes, but if you're not a journalist. Just make sure that's not your profession.

HK- No Problem
Shanghai- No Problem
Beijing- "Should be" No Problem
Macau- Definetly No Problem
Tibet- Certain places.

I live in China, by the way.

ALSO.. .right now they want to look good, friendly and open to the west as the Olympics are coming up so they will be more tolleratnt now.

I'm planning a trip to Hong kong to do a Ving Tsun kungfu documentary.

Good luck
