I have a pretty great camera, but I still make crappy films.

I fear that's most of us. Whether we want to admit it or not.

I shot Super 8mm in college. The results were average.
I grew into video when the VX100 and then PD150 came out. Loved that camera. I shot more average footage with it.
The DVX100 came out. What a nice picture. I shot even more average footage with that thing.
I shot some stuff with a Canon Vixia last year. Nice little camera. What came out was pretty average.
I now have an HPX170, and have shot with DSLRs, even shot with big camcorders. Pretty much average footage came out of those too.

Does this mean if I buy a Canon 5D Mark III or Red Epic-S when it comes out, my first project with it won't get into Sundance and picked up for distribution?
