take a still in video mode (degrade quality?)

Hi,
i have a canon mark ii.
when i am in videomode and i take a still picture, do i degrade the quality of the picture ? (should i be in still mode ?)

Because i remember, with a camcorder, in video mode, when you take a still, you lose quality.

I imagine it would be pretty easy to knock off two identical shots in each mode and then just compare them yourself.
