T-REEL LOCK and PQ tape

Okay...so...a few months ago we had a T-reel lock error with one of our DVX's. Got both cams serviced as it was time.

So, yesterday. The T-reel error rears its ugly head again.

I have a hypothesis. I never had these problems prior to switching to PQ tape after the MQ's went away.

I do get away with simply changing out the cassette and loosing the error. So, has anyone else had this problem? Re: the T-reel lock error the tech that serviced our cams mentioned sometimes its a bad cassette.

What's up Panny?

I had that problem, and I called up Panasonic, and they told me to just try pressing the "Reset" button, I was like, "I guarantee that won't work." but was obliged to try it.

Turns out, it actually did, I have shot 2 full tapes (Same kind) with no error of any sort.

Good luck with it bro

gonna try this.

I also had this problem for about 11 months until it got so bad I couldn't record or play back. I brought it in to the local authorized Panny dealer and to my dismay the owner thought a DVX100b was a VCR, then the receptionist asked me if such a camera even existed, and finally they had to order a service manual because they had never worked on a "palm corder" like this one.

Then I got a call two weeks later saying that it was fixed. To my astonishment, they DID know what they were doing after all! He said the repair manual had a bulletin insert that gave an explanation of the Auto Reel Lock problem. Turns out he just went in, found a loose connection, and applied an epoxy or glue that conducts electricity. No deck replacement, no clutch replacement. Just some glue and labor costs. It cost me less than $200.

Seems some reel locks are caused by a bad connection!

interesting. glad you didn't have to replace the whole thing. I'm thinking of just getting a digital recorder if the problem keeps persisting and just get off of tape

it seems everything is fine if i just let the tape record. Its when i start/stop alot or switch to the vcr mode for playback that i run into problems. Thinking i may just let the tape roll as its cheap

This is EXACTLY how my problem started out. It only happened on playback until... my friends' wedding. The camera worked fine all morning the day of. I decided to double check it 15 minutes before the ceremony and of course it locked on every tape I put in it. At the last minute, I remembered I had a can of compressed air in my car. I ran up the hill to my car (outdoor wedding), got it, and ran down the hill off to the side as the groomsmen were coming down to the alter. I gave it a quick shot of air and it worked until 10 minutes after the ceremony. That's when I decided to 1. get the darn thing fixed, and 2. never shoot a wedding for free again!

If I ever shoot a wedding again I will definitely be purchasing another camera (maybe two) for backup.

Hopefully your cam won't get worse like mine did but it's probably better to be safe than sorry.

what town was the shop in that you had it fixed? I would pay 200 if it would work perfectly afterwards.

I live near Springfield, IL. I walked in to Beatty Televisual and (like I stated before) they had never worked on one before. They ordered the manual for it and right their in the book was the flyer that told him how to fix it. I'm sure, now that they know how to, they'd be happy to fix yours. Their website is: http://www.beattytelevisual.com/

I'm going there Monday to rent a lav. I'll ask them if they take send-ins. I don't see why they'd turn down business though!

cool let me know. i still havent even tried the reset function as i hate to lose all my programmed modes. SHot this weekend and it only gave me grief once really.

When I spoke to them they said you can send it in but there is a $59 diagnostic fee that must be paid at the time they receive it. So, you can either send the camera in to them with your cc info or with a phone number they can call to get your cc info. Then they'd fix it, charge any remaining amount of money to the card, and send it back to you. This is exactly how they handled it with me except for mailing the camera back and forth.

You might want to try calling them and asking the tech how he fixed it and bringing your cam into a local shop with that information. Might save you some money in the long run. Be prepared though, there are some bad apples there among the good. They mean well but they're just not the friendliest! Ha ha.

note: the reset seemed to help the situation but it still appears on occasion. Just burning a lot more tape and not cutting at this point. once it gets going its fine. its the stop starting that kills

bought the camera last july (07/09) just opened the box - same problem. called panasonic - they were familiar and it's going to warranty repair in kansas

Same issue here on two brand new cams. I found that when I have the OIS Image Stabilazer on it causes the tape to lock when im putting the tape in. Once i turned the OIS off no more issues till date. I mainly shoot on a tripod so no need for it, you can turn it on once the tape is in if you need it.

this happened to me right when the bridal party made their entrance during the ceremony last weekend. after i crapped my pants and scrounged up a new tape I discovered that the tape in the camera was screwed up. i missed the bridal party entrance, had to re-do all my settings, and regain sanity all over a little broken tape :)
