System Configuration

I am looking at configuring a system to edit an HD feature and be able to view ti on an HD monitor - I am thinking about the following

AJA XENA-LH Capture/Playback PCI-X Card - will be able to output many formats to see the film on an HD tv or a HD production monitor (right?)

Avid xpress HD

both of these will run on the following machine

HP Workstation xw8200 Microsoft® Windows®
HP Workstation xw8200
Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional 32-bit
Intel® Xeon® 3.40GHz/2MB 800FSB
Intel® Xeon® 3.40GHz/2MB 800FSB (2nd)
NVIDIA Quadro FX3450 256MB PCI-E
4GB (4x1GB) DDR2-400 ECC reg
160GB SATA 3Gb/s NCQ 7200 (1st)
160GB SATA 3Gb/s NCQ 7200 (2nd)

any opinions - this full package will cost about 8500

I also have a lacie 2 terrabyte USB drive to actual do the edit on - that performs well on our present machine - but to output full HD on the above system we would have to output the file to the local SATA disk since the aja card requires a sata disk

the xena-lh (or any other third party card) is supported by avid xpress hd? that would be new to me.

I put together a similarly spec'd system only i'm using dual opterons....geeezus this thing smokes. The only reason I went with Opterons is for future compatability with vista. Either way you won't be upset.

the card isnt supported by avid - but our hd vid is already captured (shot on HVX) - really just need the card for real time monitoring to check the shots (color etc) on an external HD Monitor. We could just output the uncompressed vid and then play outside of avid to do that - am i thinking about this correctly?

might also get black magics card - cheaper and seems to do what we need

don't get me wrong - but what do want to monitor when the card isn't supported by avid? as far as i'm seeing that you won't see anything with a "third party card" (capturing or monitoring).

please correct me if i'm missing something

EDIT #1:

oh, now i've got it (i think). but then you have to run premiere pro for example to watch the vid

EDIT #2

avid xpress 5.5 is supporting dvi monitoring on the 2nd display. wouldn't it be possible to go to (sd/hd)sdi via an adapter/converter (dvi to sdi) to watch the vid?

the idea is to use another app - maybe the app that comes with the card to monitor - output from avid and monitor after to check the edit. not ideal but would work

i have to look into avid 2nd monitor
