SYNECO - less is more. FS7QQ

Hi all!

We shot this film last november on the good (old :-P) FS700 + 7Q + various Nikon glass.

The language is german only but i think having a look won't hurt :), curious what you guys say about the look, feel and images we got...

as always, any feedback is appreciated!

cheers!

I really liked the movement in a lot of your shots. I also really liked the softer color palette of your images. Has that FilmConvert vibe (I could be wrong here. Perhaps Speedgrade) which I really liked.

I really liked the visuals and only wish I could understand the language as I'm sure it made the piece even better. Good work!

Aside from film stocks in FilmConvert, I don't know how you could pin a look down to the tool that was used to create it. Obviously programs like SpeedGrade and Resolve have more tools for a huge amount of control over the image, but the end "look" can't really be determined by the program used.

That's like saying "Your editing is great, really has the Adobe Premiere vibe, or perhaps you did it in Avid"

Hey all, thanks for your replies and for your kind words!

the grading was 100% done in Speedgrade, i mostly used a FPE LUT or Vision Space LUT from the Impulz series for a starting point, combined with various other adjustments - the new curve tools are super handy. For some shots i just used the unclipped rec709 lut which can be found on the f5/55 sony forums, and dialed down the exposure a bit. The unclipped luts are great for a fast colorful look and nice skintones, if exposed correctly.

I like muted blacks, not super deep.

Well, I just felt the color palette felt like some of the looks attainable from the film stocks available in filmconvert...which I personally like. But I also know that Speedgrade has some LUTs that could have yielded this result. I'm well aware that one can color to attain similar looks in a wide variety of different softwares. I suppose I could have been much more specific in my language, to avoid such pitfalls, but honestly, I just saw the post and responded candidly and freely. Make the worst of my comments if you must, but it was meant as an affirmation of my appreciation for his work...which Inalways enjoy. I'm just speculating on how those looks might have been achieved.

To to say that it is similar to saying that this has an avid vibe or a premiere vibe, while I see your point, seems like it is more an attempt to discredit my comment than anything else. Im not going to say with certainty that that was your intent, but again, speaking candidly, it feels like that could be the case...which is well within your right, I suppose. While there are similarities between what I said and your comparison, honestly, there are also some differences between saying something had a filmconvert "vibe" and saying something has a premiere vibe.

In in any case, I respect your work--what I have seen on your website--and appreciate what you bring to this forum. It's not necessary that you feel the same about me, but no need to mock me. It's not as if I'm misinforming or being rude.

Really like the visuals.

If I had to critique, I'd say the colour balance shifts between some images. (perhaps that was intentional) otherwise, maybe your cuts are a little too quick for the pace of the narration. I don't understand what he's saying, but it's rhythmic and your cuts seem to be hurried compared to his dialogue. Very minor complaints though.

thanks sean, the colour shift is intentional between locations, but not between takes of the same scene - do you see inconsistency in a scene?

I think the cuts work as they are but overall everything is a bit fast. A lot of content got squeezed into these 3 mins...

Looked good!
Only the voice talent has a strange way of accentuating, clashing with the flow of the images.
But that probably was the in-house PR department underlining words they wanted to be emphasized without having a feel for when it's better to let the images speak for themselves;)

Thanks, the voiceover was done the night before the deadline-day, maybe that's why - we would have done better with an Austrian speaker anyway, but in the short time we had to get this spoken, this voice over guy was the only option.

I don't think that the accentuation is working against the images though - Maybe my view on that would be different if i would not understand what is being spoken. Hope that makes sense. EDIT: just noticed that you speak german as well, my apologies!

@Ben: thanks!
