Syncing up audio

Cutting a 5D feature in FCP.

The audio was recorded separately.

Can I cut the film and then sync the sound after the picture is locked, or is it better to sync all the footage, with pluraeyes or something similar, and cut with synced clips.

I won't be doing the sounds design or mix.

Sync first. It's much easier to sync the second-system sound files when you have the entire takes, including the slates. That way, you're also editing with the good audio and you know if there are problems with the second-system files.

Trying to sync after you've cut is going to be a major PITA. More than that, it's a job that will fall to the sound editor/designer which will draw some pretty serious ire.

Most definitely sync all your dailies first or it will be impossible. You'll spend maybe a few days doing this up front instead of frustrating weeks trying to do it later. One easy way in FCP is to make nested clips which link original picture with double-system audio. Then use those to edit with..
