Syncing DVX with TC free run

I know that with the XL2 you can sync several cameras using the time code free run mode. Can you do this with the DVX100a or XL1s?
 
You can't jam on the DVX100A, you just have to use the same remote control to configure both (or all) cameras to use the same timecode preset.
 
but for some reason if you are syncing up 100a's with regular 100's In my limited experience it doesnt work. An all day music festival shoot I was on had two DVX00a's and 1 DVX100 and they were all synced to free run with the same controller and for some reason the 100 slipped behind the others. I wasnt personally operating the 100 so I dont know if it could have been operator error but they were synced up when I saw all three start shooting. I wonder if there is some known explanation or if this was a fluke. The dvx100 operator said that it had happened to him before on multi dvx100/a shoots.

ahh, I see. I didn't know the controllers would work that way. I take it you don't have to set anything on the camera for that to work , right?
