Syncing Audio

Does audio recorded on a double system (separate recording from camera) automatically line up upon import.

In other words, If picture and audio are recorded separately using the identical timecode source line up in sync automatically upon import. Does Avid recognize the embedded timecode and match up the independent video and audio clips.

I am an audio engineer with limited knowledge of editing systems. This is the case in Pro Tools or any professional audio editing software.

Never specifically tried this. However, they would come in as seperate clips (digitized footage and imported audio from recorder for instance). They could easily be resynced using the TC

So is there a TC function in Avid that will line up these clips?

The problem is of course that the raw clips are stored in the bin and may or may not be used by the editor. If there is no synced audio then the clips are useless with just seeing the picture.
How do you receive your imported files? Almost ALL professional shoots are recorded on a double system and not simply a mic into the camera.

Yes you could easily sync footage & sound off of master TC. There are several ways for lining up audio and video with TC, it depends on editor preferences and workflow.

One way is to use the Autosync feature. Used exactly for this purpose (usually creating subclips by syncing clappers) Find common sync points, mark in, then place both audio and video masterclips in one bin, highlight them both, and Autosync. The resulting subclip will contain both audio and video media synced to your in points. In this case you could just use the audio's TC instead of the clapper.

There are other methods too. I would imagine script based editing could be used too, but am unfamiliar with this style of editing.

yes, if timecode is consistant, merging clip and audio together would only take moments. do you need to do this yourself or just want to know for the sake of someone else?

Thank you xmephestox. A most useful link.
However, the video shows 'striped' timecode that has ben recorded on one of the camera's open audio tracks. I will be using an F900 so it will have embedded TC. So back to my original question: Will Avid automatically align these two separate but identical timecodes.

I think this is what MikeyP might be referring to. It is just too much work to sync a full length feature lining up separate video and audio files with a clapper.

Select the Video. Select the corresponding Audio. Choose AutoSync from one of the menus (not in front of a system, so this is by memory and I can't remember which menu). Choose to sync by timecode. A new clip will be created with audio and video in sync.

If the timecode is identical, that should be all you need to do.
