sync problems

When exporting an 82 minute/24p project using the Avid DV express pro, my .mov is out of sync.

(The sync gets progressively worse as the film moves on.)

When I do a separate video .mov and a audio wave, same problem.

Can anyone help? (Since Avid obviously cannot.)

Please feel free to email me at YouAreAloneMOVIE@ aol.com

THANKS!

Re: sync problems

Do you export as Quicktime Reference?

Because I got some problems too when exporting a quicktime ref. movie. First, the export doesn't fill the blacks at the beginnig and end. And ofter my movie plays at 24.99fps when it must be played at 25fps.

So all this will make that my movie and audio files after converting to Mpeg2 will have different lenghts. I don't know where the problem is, but I know that I have set the export window for filling the empty spaces with black, but my quicktime ref, movie will not contain it, it will start at the first fade in.

So I solve this problem(24.99fps and no blacks) with a mixdown of the first and the last minute of the sequence.

Re: sync problems

Try audio mixing and video mixdowning everything. Then you can export to quicktime ref.. or just export as quicktime.. NOT REFERENCE.. and click use AVID CODEC..

Loading will be killer, it will take a while.. but in order for me to make dvd's or jus play it through a deck, and not have it synced out, I must do this. Try it.. let me know how it goes

Re: sync problems

We are using ver 4.3. on a PC. I did render everything and mix video and audio down and it was still out of sync, but when  I tried the quicktime ref and it worked!! Before I did the QT ref I did try exporting to DVCpro file and it also was out of sync.

I burned the DVD but it's digging in the black, the black level was low - my guess 0. So i'm going to try to color correct the mix down and try burning it again. - thanks for you help.

Re: sync problems

I would upgade to either 4.6 (free update) or to 5.0 ($50). If I remember correctly, 4.3 had known QT export sync problems.

The black level can quickly be checked out with the waveform/vectorscope monitor in the color correction tool. Your blackest black should be at 16RGB (= 7.5 IRE in analog) on the scopes. If that is the issue, you can add a color correct to the top video track and do a lift to the entire sequence.

Re: sync problems

Regarding the upgrade: since I have such a huge project that I'm working on, 84 minutes, 500 gig of digitized footage, I'm worried that upgrading might mess with the project. Can I upgrade safely, without the risk of losing anything?

Regarding blacks: the output of the mojo looks fine, but when we burn to DVD, the black levels appear to be at zero. We raised video mixdown setup level to 7 to see if that helps. Is there a reason burning to DVD would affect black levels???

Thanks!

Re: sync problems

I've gone through many upgrades with Avid and never once lost any projects or media. Still better safe than sorry. Back up the project folder and if you can find the extra drive space the OMFIMediaFiles folder.

You can aslo look at it this way: Which is worse? Being concerned about upgrading, or dealing with your sync issue?

Re: sync problems

Thanks for the info...though I'll probably wait until the project is over and done with to upgrade.

The sync is a problem, but losing or causing damage to the project is worse...MUCH WORSE...as in the long run, I won't be exporting as a .mov, but to a digibeta, and that isn't a problem.

The media file folder is almost 500 gig...so I plan on getting a second 500 gig drive for a back up anyway...eventually.
