Sync Issues - Time sensitive

Okay, so if I'm capturing it wrong, I will feel like a complete idiot, however I don't think I am. I haven't used a DVX in a while and I recently used one for a shoot.

Capturing it in FCP 6 through "Easy Setup", "DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal". I shot 24pa and I had the camera turned off and unplugged from firewire prior to starting FCP. Started it up, turned camera on, set to VTR mode, plugged in FW and went to "Log and Capture". It said initializing device and the image appeared on screen.

I clicked "Now" in the FCP window and "Play" on the camera and it captured. I checked the QT file in "Capture Scratch" and played it using QT. Worked perfectly fine. Dropped it into the timeline of FCP, it said the sequence settings didn't match clip settings, so I clicked yes to adjust sequence settings to match clip settings (*NOTE: I've attempted not adjusting sequence settings as well*)

Now this is where the problem arises. Nothing is in sync (audio/video), there is quite a bit of black screen at the end of the video, but music is still playing. The last shot of the shoot is in there however, so I don't know where this music came from. There is random moments of silence (or no music...) and I don't know how to fix it. I've captured it three times so far and nothing's worked.

If I didn't capture it right, should it not have worked in QT? Any help is greatly appreciated. I have an upcoming deadline and I'd really like to get started editing.

Thanks,

Kegan

There's your problem. The capture setting should not be 24p, but 29.97 with Advanced Pulldown Removal (2:3:3:2). By setting the capture time base to 23.976 (23.98), you are asking FCP to arbitrarily ignore some frames in the data stream. Because it was recorded to tape at 29.97, FCP needs complete access to all frames in order to detect the cadence.

Your capture setting should be set to DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced Pulldown Removal.

Ahhh, okay thank you very much. I was trying to sync up audio because we also recorded from a Zoom H4n and I was wondering why the song was longer than the video. This makes sense.

I will recapture right away and post back with results. Much appreciated C2V.

Hmm, when I went to recapture (its recapturing now..), in "Easy Setup" the settings that I posted were there, but when I went to "Log and Capture", the settings were what you listed - DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced Pulldown Removal.

So I don't know what to put in "Easy Setup", or is that completely irrelevant? I'm attempting to capture regardless and we'll see how it goes.

Thanks,

Kegan

I rarely use Easy Setup. That's a setup shortcut that's intended for less-experienced users, though I will use it if I have a very basic, 60i DV project or something that doesn't have intense needs (usually if I just need a quick capture session). There are other preference menus that give you finite control over all your capture, sequence, render, and other settings. I always set my projects up through Final Cut Pro>Audio and Video Settings.

But I also have my own custom capture settings. For example, FCP did not already have a setting for DV NTSC 48kHz with pulldown removal that also flagged the clips as anamorphic, but it had one for anamorphic that did not remove the pulldown. So I made a copy of the one with pulldown removal and added the anamorphic selection to it.

Looks like the same thing captured. I know there must be some setting that is off. I checked in the audio and video settings and found nothing that was different (all settings were for: DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced Pulldown Removal)

My out of sync issue is now only off by a couple seconds, but it is still off. It seems that my major problem is that the length is significantly cut shorter through the capture (with dropped frames or whatever) and it doesn't sync with the recorded audio from the Zoom.

If I could get all the data from the stream imported, I don't think I would have a problem. It's getting there that's tough..

Well, I captured it again. I even changed the easy setup frame rate to 29.97 just to see if that would have any bearing. Nothing. Nada. Zip.

I'm running out of ideas here. It plays fine in QT (synced), it plays fine in camera (synced), but in FCP it doesn't work and is shorter than the audio file for the exact same take, lined up to the slate.

I just haven't encountered a problem like this previously and I have no idea what to do.

EDIT: My real question is, why does the audio/video sync in QT and not in FCP? If the capture was bad (ie - dropped frames, shorter video for whatever reason), shouldn't that mean it plays like that in QT as well?

It may be that in one of your first attempts you ended up messing with the sequence settings.

Make absolutely sure that you sequence is set to 24p (23.976). You may have to create a new sequence just to be sure, as changes made in the dropdown menu (Final Cut Pro>Audio and Video Settings) will not affect sequences already created.

Just tried it and it says that the clip settings do not match the sequence settings. Let it drop in regardless and still it doesn't line up. I tried it with 24 and 23.98 (new sequences for each). Neither worked.
