Sync issue w/DVX-100 & Avid?

There was a thread that mentioned sync issues w/the DVX-100 and Avid Xpress. I jumped in because I had never about any issues (although I keep thinking my sync is off!), no satisfactory response. So I own a 100 (not the A), shoot F5 (24p), and import into Avid Xpress Pro 4.6 through firewire from a panasonic dv2500 (no mojo) and burn master DVD from the MAC (iDVD - just for presentations and simple lay-off).

Any issues? or am I just nervous...

Thanks

Yes there is a minor sync issue. Don't know if Avid automatically compensates or not. On the original DVX100, shooting 24p, the audio precedes the video on tape by 2 frames. Nobody ever notices, but if it looks "off" to you, that's why. Some programs can automatically compensate (I believe FCP does, and I believe DVFilm Maker does as well) but I don't know if Avid can.

If you want 100% accurate sync, you have to slide your audio files two frames to the right on the timeline.

You can compensate for the audio during capture. Select the number of frames you want to delay in the "Audio Delay" menu right in the capture window. No need to post process after capture.

I had a synch problem this past weekend. I competed in the NYC 48 Hour Film Project. Shot on the DVX100A, 24P (normal), edited on a 30i timeline, everything captured was in synch. At 6pm we finished editing went to print to tape using the "Blue Ball" method Firewire directly to the DVX100A as my deck. The printing was going well until it slowly started going out of synch, few frames, to more frames, to total out of synch. We stopped retried numerous time. Changing sampling rate, doing new mixdowns, etc. Nothing. Then we got it working by recording it back onto a different camera (a one chip canon miniDV). Now, I know I shouldn't be using my baby (DVX100A) as a deck, but does anyone know why this synch issue happens? How does one fix it?

I actually had this probably before on my system (P4, 3.2, 2 gigs ram, Avid Xpress 4.5.1) with an old project shot on film and edited on a different system, but when I recorded that old project to the canon camera it also fell out of synch. Any advice?

Michael,

Computer Specs:

Pentium 4, 3.2 GHZ
2 Gigs Ram
320 gigs hard drive (Raid 0, 2x 160 hard drives)
No mojo
Avid Xpress Pro 4.5.1
Shooting 24p (Normal)
Editing in 30i timeline

The latest release in the 4.x line is a 4.6.3 which I suggest you get to see if this problem persists.

You might want to consider the 5.1 release as it has a lot of mnew features which you might find useful - I believe it has a $50 price tag.
