SXSW Trade Show

Runner Up.
Having been in Austin for Spring Break, I came across the SXSW Interactive Trade Show. There were many good things about the show, as well as many things I was disappointed in.

The good first...

I finally caught my first glimpse of the VariCam in action. HOLY CRAP THIS CAMERA IS AMAZING! I had the guy show me a demonstration of what 60p is capable of looking like...he popped in a tape of the winter olympics and I was immediately impressed. I have never seen footage as fluent in slow motion and look so good!

For the bad....

They had the Sony HD-FX there. I saw it, messed with it a little. The images were a lot crisper than I thought they would be, but when I changed it to the 'simulated 24p' and was sickened. All the camera does is make it have a strobe effect with what it seems like dropped frames. Talk about disappointment. I will never use that camera for a shoot because of this. Yes it shoots HDV, but no, it doesn't produce anything close to 24p. BOO SONY!

Justin,

The CF24 mode has to be processed to look right. Out the box, on CF24 mode the image looks just as you described....ugly. But remember, that's not the final product. Once you process the footage...it becomes gorgeous 24p footage. Trust me, I know because I have done it.

many people place the camera on CF24 and make a final judgement. You cannot do that with the Sony HDV cameras.
