How often do people re-format their SxS cards. Most of the time I just delete the files off the cards, and reformat them once a month or so. I have one client that re-formats them after every use, but that seems like overkill.
ditto. Ensures a fresh card. I can definitely see deleting all clips everytime getting the card pretty fragmented, which could be a big problem for the kxs cards that are already pushing the brim of their throughput
If you deleted all clips, how could there be fragmentation? Fragmentation only occurs in a FAT32 file structure when there are numerous files on the media and not enough contiguous space to hold new files in one contiguous area. I could see this happening of the card were half full, but not empty.
Because as with any disk when you delete files they are still there, just overwritten when new data is called in. Might as well just do it in the first place with a full format and prevent any fragmentation that might occur when overwriting said previously deleted media
I format my cards every time after I have double backed up and viewed the content. I have deleted clips in the past but have had BPAV directory issues where some of the meta data got screwed up. I had to eventually send the card in to Sony where they rewrote the meta data script to recover the content on the card. They gave no real explanation as to why this happened, but my suspicion is that deleting clips doesn't allow for previous content meta data to clear out, thus the directory which holds these wrapped files gets confused and fails on import.
Also, I always lock my card after capturing content so when I throw the SxS into a card reader or laptop express port there is no chance of unwanted data transfer from the card to the computer/vise versa.
I have a Laptop VAIO with Express Card Slot. Always I re format the card from the camera, I think Sony it should put the option to format from the Clip Browser.
Once a file is deleted, the operating system will write over anything that was there, as long as the FAT table entry is deleted. The only fragmentation that can happen is if there are files that are NOT deleted and the OS has to write around those areas of the media.
But reformatting is not a bad idea if you want to make sure any corruption of the media is cleaned up.
