F55: SxS Pro+ Cards not reading in Mac Pro?

Hi all --

Just purchased a F55 package and I'm having trouble getting my Mac Pro to recognize the 128 GB Sony SxS Pro+ card (note the Plus).

The error message is: "Disk Insertion: The Disk you inserted is not readable by this computer". I am using a USB 2.0 Sony SxS Card reader. I tried downloading upgraded device driver from the Sony SxS support site and that did not help. I've had no problem in the past reading standard SxS Pro cards...

Here are the specs for my Mac Pro:

Model Name: Mac Pro
Model Identifier: MacPro3,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 1.6 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MP31.006C.B05

If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Ned --

Thanks for the speedy response. I just tried installing the SxS UDF driver and the problem persists. I'm also having the same issue with the 64GB Sony SxS-1 cards, so it's not just the SxS Pro+.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

T.J.

No idea, then. You're on a very old OS and if indeed computer only has 2gb of RAM, well below requirements actually to run anything. I just have the suspicion it is something about the newer cards and the old OS. I have not heard any reports that the old USB 2.0 reader is incompatible with the Pro+ or SxS-1 cards so I doubt that's the problem. Sorry I can be more helpful; just can't come up with any other possibilities.

Lots of modern OS X based software doesn't work on anything prior to Snow Leopard, in other words OS 10.6.x

If you are willing and able, I would give upgrading your machine to 10.6.x a shot. I run all the Sony driver stuff and s/w off of serveral machines, one of which is a Mac Pro older than your and it works but it is running Snow Leopard. As Ned says, 2 GB of ram is not very much. You can pick up memory for that vintage of machine now at reasonable cost.

According to the Sony release notes, this driver supports OS X 10.5.8 (which is what I'm using) and requires 1GB+ memory (2GB+ recommended). So based on that, my current machine should at least be able to recognize the cards as media when inserted into the SxS reader...

Or is there another component besides this driver that would require a higher Mac OS version?

There's a difference between supporting and making use of correctly.

Please trust us when we say your problem likely lies in 10.5.8, despite what the read me says.

128gb is the biggest SxS card to date. Usually all parts of the software chain need to be up to snuff with the biggest sizes of flash memory, this goes for SSDs and ram too.

The ONLY other thing that could be an issue is that the firmware in the USB 2.0 reader is tripping it up, since that reader was designed for cards 6 years old.

Thanks very much for the insight, all. I am going to do the OS X upgrade and will report back. If that doesn't work, do you know where I could check for firmware with the card reader?

If you are using the older SxS-1 card, it should work with your Sony USB card reader. They were made for use with that card.

One thing that should be asked... do you have the power supply for the Sony USB card reader and is the jack securely plugged in and do you see a little red light beside the slot that is lit up. Not sure if you have to have the card in the reader or not for it to light up? It is possible you have a bad power supply or it isn't properly connected.

Yes -- card reader is plugged in. An error message shows up on my computer screen when I insert a SxS-1 or SxS Pro+ card.

Apparently the problem with the SxS Pro+ cards I'm having is actually because I am using a US10 USB 2.0 card reader, and only the US20 USB 3.0 card reader can work with the Pro+ cards. Still trying to figure out why the SxS-1 cards aren't working.

Is anybody here successfully using the SxS-1 cards in a US10 SxS reader?

Have you tried uninstalling the SxS driver and the UDF driver and then reinstalling? I cannot recall if there is an uninstaller app with the SxS driver. I would check the installer package first and of course read the instructions that came with the installer package. There is probably specific instructions on removal of the software in case the preferences or something else is corrupt.

The card reader is the reason my SxS Pro+ card is not working (picking up one of those this week), however I still cannot get the SxS-1 card to work. The Sony rep I talked to assured me that the SxS-1 card does not require the US20 USB 3.0 card reader and does not require the UDF driver. So I'm totally stumped...

I am going to try uninstalling the SxS driver and re-installing it to see if that helps.

Update -- I tried uninstalling and re-installing the SxS driver, and also tried using another Mac -- Powerbook G4 with OSX 6. Tried installing new driver on that and the same message popped up. This is driving me crazy -- what is different about the SxS-1 cards that won't work on my machines?

Lots. As far as I know, over the course of the SxS format they've changed numbers of flash chips, types of controllers in the cards, all sorts of stuff. If I recall, SxS-1 is a completely different type of flash ram, that's why it's cheaper and doesn't go as many cycles.

That's why we said get up to date from the get go. There's been so many SxS driver revisions that enable the newest, biggest card, that it's been clear if you've been following it for a while (since 2008-9) that each new card needs relatively new-ish card readers, drivers, OS updates, everything.

You'll likely go mad trying by trial and error the oldest driver/OS/hardware that you can get away with. Update to the newest you can afford/handle all in one swath and you'll get back to work.

This is a stretch but the cards have lock mechanisms on the top. Take your SxS-1 card and throw the lock switch the other way and insert. Report back. :)
