SxS Express Reader for Desktop Tower

Okay, I'm getting ready to order an EX1 or EX3 ($$$) and I was wondering if I really need to order the Sony SXS card reader for $250 or can I just put an express card reader in my tower. I have a new custom built 64-bit, quad core, 12 gig ram, 2TB Raid 0, nuclear-powered, monkey navigated machine running Vista. I checked the few threads about the subject and the answer doesn't seem to be clear. Now I know some of you helpful types are going to tell me to buy a "cheap" laptop to offload my files, and God bless your good natured hearts, but that's not the question I'm asking... I'd like to know what anyone of you who have this question solved and what your solution was for your PC Tower. I really want to get the EX3, so I got to keep the budget within what I told my wife, I'll probably go over a bit anyway... Thanks, -Tony

I have this installed on two workstations: first one is a Woodcrest 5160 dual core-dual xeon 3.0 GHZ running on XPPro and the second a Dell XPS 730x with an i7 3.2 GHZ running on Vista 64. It works well on both with fantastic download times (about 1/2- 1/4 of what the USB card reader does from Sony). The only caveat is that it is not hotswappable but there is an easy workaround: You have to have the SxS card in the slot when you boot up the computer. Once this is done you can swap with another card but you have to go into device manager - right click on disk drives and "scan for hardware changes" both when you remove the old card and again when you insert the new card. Seems to work fine for me on both machines. My Sony Vaio laptop is hot swappable but there is some conflict the the OS on desktops that prevents it with these type of devices; Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PI154M/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

Forgot to mention - if you have MxR or MxM cards you can use this device for USB card download and this part is hot swappable. Look at your new computer - you have to have a PCIE x1 slot (for the expresscard portion) and also a USB header on the montherboard (which does not have to be connected if you don't have one).

Not to highjack the thread, but if one does use the MxR cards, e-films just reduced the price on the e-MCR which allows to injest up to 4 cards at once, and it comes with a Shotput Pro Software from Imagine Products ($80 value) for the file download and backup management.

Planetweckesser - Fantastic! Thanks so much for your concise answer and link. That's exactly what I was looking for... I really appreciate these forums for timely answers and product education. -Tony
