F5: SxS and ExpressCard?

Hello folks,

I was reading about the F5/F55 and how it needs a new type of SxS called SxS Pro+, and it got me wondering. Has anyone every tried using an ExpressCard SSD in an SxS card slot?

I have a feeling it won't actually work, since they don't use the same protocols, but if it did work, there could be a renewed interest in developing the cards, and a possible cheaper solution than getting SxS Pro+ cards, which are ridiculously expensive.

I can't speak in relation to the F5/F55 or new SxS Pro+ cards, but I did try this idea out with the Sony EX1 and a Wintec Express34 SSD card. The short answer is that the camera wouldn't recognize it. I suspect this would still be true.

Check out the media chart published by Sony. You only need the SxS Pro+ cards for HFR, 2K and 4K. SxS Pro cards work in most codecs/frame rates and in some you can even use the SxS-1 cards.

Supposedly what does work in some capacity is Sony QXD cards in Sony adapters.

But it's not like it's enough savings to really put up with the risk, in my opinion. Also can only get up to 64GB right now, which can get eaten up quick in a F55. F5 somewhat less so, for most people.

Unless you are shooting 4K XAVC, there is little reason now to invest in Pro+ cards until HFR is implemented.

The SXS-Pro work perfectly with the F5. I also tried my adapter for SD card to SXS but that was a failure. Although it works fine on the F3, it didn't work on the F5.

I get the same... with the Sony MEAD-SD01 and class 10 Sandisk set to 50Mbs MPEG2.
Simple message - "unrecognised media"

That's a shame for when you need to shoot a bunch of MPEG2. Either the incompatibility was planned by Sony to boost SxS sales, or considering how many simple things aren't working on the F's yet, a simple oversight.
