sword swallower

Hello, long time lurker first time poster.....
My Cousin is a sword swallower, he asked me about attaching a camera to the sword to get some video of t going down into him. Does anyone have any recommendations for a thin camera.?

thanks

Thin, as in the camera going down his throat? Eeeps...

You could always mount a camera to the sword's handle and have it zoom in...

Roto Rooter has a cable cam they use for seeing into hard to reach spots, and I'd say this qualifies. But I would use a new cam if I were you.

And does he have a sister?

medical cameras...like ones meant for that kind of stuff....maybe try hiring a gastro-doctor who actually has a camera for that purpose, checking the esophagus. Hire him, and have your cousin swallow the camera instead of the sword. since he won't gag, he wont need anesthesia for it.

Only those medical ones would be safe enough to recommend as well as effective, and I'm sure they're very expensive for one shot. More importantly... why?

What kind of shot are you looking for? The camera going into the guy looking into his stomach ( point or handle mounted) or are you looking for a shot with the camera on the point pointed up at the handle/his teeth?

How are you planning on lighting his insides?

Maybe use LEDs as they are smaller and produce less heat than most. The question is, who is going to rig them?

I would put the camera on the edge of the handle... You could try a little POV camera but I don't know if they're too big. As for lighting, you should go with LED's or you could use a tiny KinoFlo Micro Beam and mount the ballast on his belt...

Definitely look into medical cameras used for laproscopic procedures. Or better yet for endoscopy... an endoscopy is basically the same thing as sword-swallowing, without the sharp bits!

And... I really want to see this video!

^^^ Thats what i meant...

LEDs are waaaay to dangerous....what if one breaks? Safety is your number one concern, if he swallows swords: that his fault, but you should not make him ingest anything that could be dangerous: glass, wires, etc. If he really wants a shot like that, its out of your hands. Tell him to bring an empty cassette tape to a G-I doctor and record the feed from that camera.

Its waaay to dangerous for you to do anything.

LEDs are made of glass, they CAN break. ive broken them before...having a bunch of glass chunks in your stomach is definitely not good.

Would you rather not use them and be 150% sure that the glass won't break in your stomach, or would you rather risk it and hope nothing will happen.......better safe than sorry.

If he actually wants the camera to go down his esophagus, I can't imagine a DIY rig.
It would have to be a video endoscope.
Here's one by Olympus, $3700:

I'm guessing the sword swallower is going for dramatic effect, but many people, as soon as they see the inner tissue, will go ewww, maybe not even watch.

If it was my call, I'd put a lipstick camera just above his hand, where the blade and handle join together.
That way, you'd have the foreground of the lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnng blade going up in the air and arcing downward, then the tip going into his mouth, then the handle sliding closer, closer, closer as the blade disappears down his mouth and throat.

I think that might be more effective than "medical" video, even medical sword video.
You can get a lipstick camera for $100-something
