Switching to Avid from Premiere

I am switching to Avid from Premiere Pro 1.5. Would I have to recapture the footage or can I import and convert the existing footage that I captured in Premiere to the correct avid supported file format?
Thanks,
Paul

export an EDL and batch digitize it into Avid.
a CMX3600 EDL otta work fine.
If you have more than 4 audio tracks, export those as a seperate EDL.
Any filters or plugins will have to be removed before exorting it and ensure that your reel names are 5 characters or less.

Avid problems?

Avid problems?

I'm switching because of the way Premiere royally screws up 24p normal footage. I've shot about 30 minutes of my feature in 24p normal and there's no way I will reshoot or start shooting 24pa and mix them. I'd think there would be problems with that. My other question is... does AVID Xpress Pro or Xpress DV have any known problems with 24pn or 24pa footage?
Thanks,
Paul

Grinner,
So this would bring my project, with correct edits, into AVID and I wouldn't have to start over at all? If so, sounds great. I'll try it when I get home and I'll let you know the results.

As long as you use Xpress Pro HD, then you can bring 24pn footage into it no problem. If you're using an older version of Xpress Pro then you need Mojo to handle 24pn footage.

Xpress DV cannot handle any type of 24p media.

I thought Xpress Pro 4.6 had 24p support. Wont 24pn work in a normal 60i timeline anyway?
Thanks,
Paul

Yes, it will work in a 60i timeline. I assumed you wanted to keep it native 23.976. Sorry.

4.6 supports 24pA pulldown over firewire. To do normal pulldown 4.6 still needed Mojo. Xpress Pro HD added normal pulldown over firewire.

Chris

No prob. Thanks for the reply. For now, I'll use the 60i timeline. I'm looking into Xpress Pro HD but I'm going to stick with 4.6 for now. That's awesome that they included that option for 23.976 in Xpress Pro HD for regular 24p footage. Is there a way to import avi files into Avid. Does Avid convert file formats or you have to capture from the tape? Cuz I just bought an FS4 and it doesn't support OMF files. I can return it because I just bought it on Sunday.
Thanks,
Paul

Quicktime is the most painless way to import footage into Avid. If nothing else you could take the AVIs from the FS4 and convert them to QT and import those. I've never worked with a FS4 so there may be a better workflow.

Chris

Grinner, I can'tbatch import unless there is something in the bin. Can you elaborate a little more on it? I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

I dunno how far along ya are, paul hbut yeah, an EDL will retain any work you've done.
If your done digitizing and have not use all the footage ya want, you'll wanna throw those raw clips on a timeline and export an EDL for those too.
Then you can hit the ground running in AVid after batch digitizing everything.
You'll have your sequence you've been working on, can trash the sequence with the raw cuts but you'll then have all that raw footage in a bin waiting for ya.
This is much quicker than dinkin with quicktimes and you'll have the same quality it was shot on.

actually, i havent even started. i'm still unsure of how to import the EDL. i tried to import it but it says it's not a supported format for importing. what i have now is as follows:

-all my premiere footage that i captured (10 tapes worth) sitting on my hard drives in .avi format

-the edl i exported for one sequence.

pretty far huh? haha. i have no idea how to use avid (i'm new to it) nor do i know anything about EDLs other than they stand for Edit Decision List....

Krestofre, the FS4 actually has quicktime as a file format. So I'm guessing I should use that and import that into Avid?
thanks,
paul

JUst keep in mind that you will have to work in the same frame rate. If you want to go from 30fps to a native 23.976fps project, you will need to go through an EDL conversion process.

I figured out the EDL import part. The only thing is that when I click on EDL in the tools menu, it says something like file not found. It also says that for metasync(i think that's the name). Do these features work on the student version?

The file not found is becuase EDL Manager was not installed. This is part of the student version. MetaSync is also available on student versions.

GO back to you installer disc and install EDL Manager.
