Switching off the onboard mic

This may be a stupid question and there may be a very simple answer to it, but is it possible to switch off the onboard mic on the GH1 when recording in motion picture mode?

If I plugged in an external mic and switch it off, would an audio timeline still come up in post production? I had planned on filming a silent video and adding in separate audio (narration and music) in post production so I was wanting to keep the audio timeline empty for that.

I'm using Windows Movie Maker (I know it's fairly basic but I haven't managed to get better post production software yet). When I add video into the timeline, the video's audio comes up automatically and when I try to delete the audio, it deletes the video too. Is there anyway to separate the video's audio from the video itself so the audio can be deleted? Or can anybody recommend any other better free film editing software that will help me overcome this problem?

Thanks

In Windows Movie Maker right click on the audio clip and you'll see options to adjust the volume or to mute it.

1) Yeah I would just record audio anyway, or 2) you might find inserting a terminated mini-jack (or whatever they call the smaller Panasonic version) that doesn't go anywhere into the audio input on the camera, might kill the onboard audio.
