Switching from 24p Advanced to 24p

Hello,

i've been shooting for the last two years in 24p Advanced mode and was wondering if i can switch to the 24p mode? I've spoken to a few cinematographers and they have recommended that i shoot in the regular 24 mode. If i switch, how will it effect me when it comes to editing? Should i switch or just stick with the Advanced mode since i've started with it?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Rob

If you switch to 24p normal, you'll want to edit on a 60i timeline and output to 29.97. Other than that, your workflow should be roughly the same.

At least until you finish this project. Then see if you notice any difference between the two settings. I doubt you'll see much.

There’s no problem with editing 24pN footage on a 24p timeline. There’s absolutely no problem with mixing 24pN and 24pA footage on a 24p timeline. It’s all 24p. Once you remove the pulldown, there’s no difference.

Propeller - what are you outputting to? Obviously, if you are going to be ending up with a film out or 24fps DVD output I would recommend sticking to the 24PA mode.

Thanks, David! I wasn't exactly sure on that.

Yeah, there's a misconception that just won't die that 24pN isn't really progressive, but it is. The only difference between 24pN and 24pA is the pulldown scheme. The difference makes 24pN more suitable for editing on a 29.97 timeline, but it most assuredly is 24p.

Feature Film Question

Feature Film Question

I've seen a few differences in some suggestions... I'm shooting my first feature film this, beginning this weekend. I want to make sure I have all the technical aspects covered. So, I need to know the following... I appreciate any help.

For the best FILM look, do I shoot...

1. 24p Advanced or just plain ol' 24p
2. If I shoot 24p Advanced, what do I set my Properties in VEGAS 5 at... (e.g., 23.976 (IVTC Film) or 24.00 (Film)
3. Width at 720, height at 480?
4. Template NTSC DV 24p Widescreen?
5. Pixel aspect ratio 1.2121 (Widescreen)?
6. Render quality -- best?
7. Motion blur -- Gaussian?
8. Deinterlaced method -- none?

Also, I'm having trouble setting my slow shutter speed... I set it at 6fps in USER 1, but when I try to use it, I keep getting INVALID.

Again, any help is MUCH APPRECIATED!!

Jeff
