Switch to 5d mk 2 from hmc150?

OK - the 5D2 is here and I'm comparing it to the HMC. The simple fact is there are different tools, both capable of excellent results when applied to the right type of shooting.

I'm going to do some specific tests between the 5D2 and HMC over the next few days because I need to learn the 5D2 inside out before doing a paid shoot and need to know how the settings (e.g. ISO vs Gain) works out. I can 'see' the light in terms of what gain is required from an HMC but I'm going to have to learn the 5D2 from scratch.

In terms of immediate comparisons, the 5D2 will be great for short takes where audio is being captured by other means, because the 5D2 built in audio is terrible. Of course that adds an extra step of sync'ing the video and audio in post. Arrggh!

The 5D2 is not going to be suitable to longer shoots where you need to capture continuously for 30-60 mins (e.g. a wedding ceremony or speeches), and at this point I'm still planning on keeping my HMCs for those types of tasks. Time will tell if I keep them all or sell a couple of them.

I'm also still thinking of picking up a 7D for the longer shots with a 135L or 70-200 f2.8L IS II, and for the 50p captures when I know I'm going to need slo-mo.

I tend to shoot most things in 720/50p and I'm now remembering the seriously long 1080 render times I used to hate compared to the 720 render times.

I already know I'm going to need to invest in several L primes for the shallow DOF, so this is not going to be a cheap exercise by any means :(

If its music video, then i say definitely go with the 5D2.

This is from my second ever attempt at shooting video (educated by CINEMA5D.COM...lol)

I have both the Panasonic HMC150 and Canon 5D MKII

Keep both. I use the HMC150 for events and BTS. 5D MKII for short movies. :)
