Switch Focus

I know this is very film school cliché, where you have the camera focused on an object in the foreground and then switch the focus to and object in the background. Every time I attempt this with the dvx in manual mode I either get the entire picture in focus or the entire picture out of focus. Is there something about the lens on the DVX that makes this more difficult? Are there any methods or tips to do this? Id appreciates any feedback. Thanks.

Zoom in to 99, and open the iris to f/2.8. This will give you the shallowest depth of field. Play around and you'll see that you can pull this move off.

It's not the lens of the DVX, it's video cameras in general. The small chips of mini DV cameras makes the shallow depth of field look difficult. That's why everyone is so excited about 35mm adapters.

Barry Green's DVX book and DVD explains this in great detail. I highly recommend it. Hope this helps.

All I can say is that a DVX has a very wide depth of field. TO try and mimimise this you want: Z99 and f2.8. Try and get the cam as close to the first subject as you can. Of course the best remedy is a 35mm adapter.
