Swishy, motion blurry, harsh light codec stressing clip

Now that's more like what were getting here in Chicago.

Barry Green, our results are the same as Warren's. You must have got a dud. BTW. I've spent considerable time with the regional sales manager for JVC (Midwest) and the camera and we are getting no splitscreen at all (in all conditions). I'd recommend giving it another try. The CA is definately there on the edges but the center should be sharp focus to 800 lines.

Yes, I'm 100% convinced my lens is defective. It just doesn't compare to what you guys are getting. I started looking into it because when I first started looking at the HD footage it was like "so? big deal..." and that's NOT what HD is supposed to be!

Thanks for running the tests Warren. You're getting a lot more res out of your camera than I can get out of mine, and you could have framed the shot even tighter (see all the white space above the arrowheads? You could have zoomed in even closer, which would show even more res on the chart. The arrowheads on the bottom are exactly where you'd want them to be.)

Well, add that to the list of potential HD100 defects -- not only do you run the guaranteed risk of chromatic aberration and the apparent hit-or-miss of splitscreen, but you can also get stuck with a coke-bottle lens... sigh...

but I assume we're looking for enough detail to see line delineation in the 700 to 800 line convergences. If the detail isn't there, those areas merge into gray. Is that right guys?
What you're looking for is the point at which you can no longer distinguish four distinct black lines. When they start to mush together to the point where you can't easily discern all four lines, that's where you stop measuring. Again, on your chart, your actual resolution is probably even higher than what you show because you could have zoomed in a little bit more...

Mine, on the other hand, is zoomed in to the absolute ultimate degree, it's focused to pinpoint precision using HDV Rack at 4x magnification at f/1.4, then lit up and stopped down to f/5.6 so I could even take advantage of some DOF. It was focused at the exact focal length it was shot at, to eliminate any question of backfocus errors. It should be as absolutely sharp and pinpoint-focused as anyone could ever get -- and I get maybe 550x550.

As Stephen said, it's a dud.

Now I have to go through JVC's "The Perfect Experience" to see if they'll replace it. I'll let you know how that goes.

Barry, You may get lucky and get a completely defective free camera. I shot with JD (DSM - JVC) for 3 hours trying to force a splitscreen in all scenario's and never got a split screen or unmanageable smear. We stored Tim Dashoods recipes on SD and he already had Amelie, Four Kings and English Patient presets. Incredible customization. CA is there on the edges of the lens (outer portions of the frame) and that lens breaths, alot, but it is sharp sharp. We used Liquid's live capture and HDVRack at the Museum of Science and Industry here in Chicago. I'll get more hands on next week in live situations without thinking about any of the 'problems' and see how it turns out. The HD-100 is hitting the Chicago night club scene.

Good luck, Barry. I hope it goes well. I know I still have to get them to fix the split screen that comes up in a couple of situations but I'm happy with the camera otherwise. I suspect you'll be a lot happier with a lens fix.

Stephen, lay your hands on that camera and don't let it go. I'll fedex this lemon to you and you can swap it out for me, okay? ;)

It looks like at least 700*800, but the JPG-compression makes it a little hard to judge exactly....

"open" does seem to be quite as good as "f4"....

Stephen, you didn't get copies of those presets did you? Were they set for HDV? I tried a couple of Tim's on HDV but they need tweaking since they change in the color space.
