Swing Away Matte Box???

I saw one video on uTube of a guy who built a swing away with a hinge.

Has anyone seen any other nice Swing Away Matte Box Options?

I have a Redrock mattebox and find it to be very sloppy when compared to my Arri swing away. However, when you compare the price the Redrock wins.

It's definitely not on par quality-wise with the $4,000 Arri, but it's a case of quality and features versus cost. The Redrock is great bang-for-the-buck. It's not the best in the world, but it's cheap enough to make up for a lot of what it may lack as opposed to the Arri, certainly.

Sorry guys I though posting this in the DIY Forum was hint eough...I was looking for a homemade option. [=(0

Oh, sorry Barry and I drifted a bit. I think to make DIY swingaway will take the help of a machinest. They really are more complicated than they seem.

Yes my friend! This is a arduous journey to be sure...but I must press on!!! Machinist be damned!

A hinge, a rail block and some rivets and bolts on one side - some magnets on the other side should do the trick.

Even as a shady tree back yard project.

Best point to start is some sort of cage, cause that already gives you a pair of 15 mm rods in the right position.
Add a rail block, bolt the hinge to it.
Check out the Easom Cage http://easom.com/paypal-orders/ or the one from Cinecity.

I guess the point is, what do want this matte box to do? Hold filters, be able to rotate filter, be a sun shade, or just look cool? If it is the latter I can see no point in having it swing away. If it is the first two you are going to face some engineering issues.

Boy, I blame myself for this.
I guess I didn't really get specific enough.

What I was proposing was:

- I already own a Matte Box. A Chrosziel 4x4. Its a bit older...but still a nice product.
- I can and do mount it to rails.
- I was exploring the possibility of converting or adapting it to swing away instead of having to slide it to chance my lenses.

I ran across this video:

And I thought I would see if anyone else had any thoughts on other possible DIY options.
Thanks for everyone taking an interest.

You beat me to it, just wanted to post that Youtube tutorial.

I think that hinge looks a bit flimsy and rustic.
Someting like an oven hinge would be in order

It looks like the quality of the hinge is where the real dilemma sits. Particularly the vertical positioning of it for a mattebox.

I actually had kind of a breakthrough on this so I'm going to do some experimenting... I'll fill everyone in as i flesh it out
