I actually just read an article about that song I found a bit interesting. Rivers Cuomo (lead singer) had the finished album, went in to meet with the suits at the label, and the meeting didn't go well.
They complained that the album was missing a hit single. They argued back and forth for awhile, until eventually Rivers was told they wouldn't release it until they were happy with a new single to push.
Cuomo went out, took a bunch of EXACT quotes he stated in the meeting ("Timbaland knows the way to the top, etc..."), wrote a song with them, and handed it back to the label. Now it's their hit song.
I'm not a big fan of Cuomo in general, but you gotta respect that.
