FS7: Swans at Greenwich Cove

(I completely agree on WFM showing 'core data' - it is completely obvious - but Red has (had?) that wrong for years)

Yep of course I need to test further... but

Im happy metering with my Nikon stills camera and its histogram (I dont really use the histo, just use it to evaluate the clip point so it can be 'replaced' with a zebra). All stills cameras have a LUT and you know that beyond that LUT where is some spare headroom. So if the Lutted Histo is not clipping then your core file certainly is not clipping - you are good to go, simple!

Now with cameras with 'knee' (FS100, EX1 etc and even I would suggest F3 Slog1) this methodology does not work because you are not primarily concerned with your clip point but keeping critical data outside the compressed knee area at the top end of the file so a different exposure methodology is required.

Now Slog3 appears to be pretty linear so there is no need to keep critical data out of the 'knee' area - it has no knee. So one can return* from worrying about a mid point/skin levels and return to watching the clip point to drive ones exposure choice.

I am still concerned about highlight compression (in 10bit) and will keep off the really low CineEI values until I have performed a formal test.

The video I posted earlier of the Mediterranean shots (very thickly exposed) but fully 'pull-able back lend some strong credance to my concept

S

*return if you have a background using linear capture, if however you have 10+ years of knee avoidance then you need to learn a new methodology.
