Sushi Restaurant

Don't take this negative:

It was REALLY long
alot of the scenes can easily be cut down to retain the viewers attention better
the images look raw/flat. You should CC them to make the beautiful colors of sushi pop out more
In reading the text that randomly came in and out (good job on that) I noticed that you spoke about them (they) and then with the (we). You should stick to a format.

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching!

The footage was actually CC'd and I think some of that got lost in the youtube conversion. I'll have to look back at the original footage to tell, but I definitely did color correction etc. on it...The video did turn out very colorful...I actually kept from going too far with it because some of the reds became blown out.

The video was long on purpose (that was only half!) - because we wanted to cut down on the amount of repeat/loops that would play back while someone is in the restaurant. We thought it would be better than a loop that repeats too much. I guess it depends on the target audience, but maybe a faster pace would have been better...point taken.

"I noticed that you spoke about them (they) and then with the (we). You should stick to a format."

Not sure what you meant by this. Would you mind clarifying...

Here are some stills from the footage, pre youtube.

Okay I dissagree with Jay Rodriguez, the length was purposely long for obvious reasons. Clearly it's being looped for 12 hours or something like that right. However, I thought the plastic gloves were unattractive. I get that it's hygenic for actual practices but for a video, those gloves just distracted from how fresh everthing looked. Also those diagrams of what was on those plates were tacky.
I gotta say though, you made that sushi look tasty and I dont even like the stuff. The colours were great and that trivia on the store was a very nice touch. Good work.

Likes:
the food looked great
the motion graphic sushi titles were effective
some really good action shots throughout
the "happy family" shot of the staff worked for me

Dislikes:
structure- there did not seem to be much pacing. I would have liked to see a few different shots/angles of the sushi, then the name (i.e. "tuna roll")

also, if you only have one sushi chef to introduce, why do it directly after "tuna rolls"? why not introduce him in the middle of facts about the restaraunt? why not have shots of more chefs? they were there for the wide shot.

the song. if you have a six minute loop that is somewhat atmospheric, why not play with segments and change the song up at least once? that is what made it seem long... (if the audio was only for YOUTUBE and you were in a hurry...disregard)

Thanks for posting it. I never thought about approaching sushi spots while on hiatus!!

Let me first say that I very much appreciate the feedback!

McLeish – yeah, the length was definitely meant to be long on purpose. Plus, I felt like this was supposed to be less of a podcast short type of thing and more of an in depth exploration of how they create their sushi. I didn’t even think about the plastic gloves, but that is a great insight! Yeah, I guess they do look kind of bad now that I think of it. I was working during normal business hours, over a lunch time no less, so I don’t know if it would have been possible to get them to take the gloves off anyway, but it’s a good point. Sorry you didn’t like the diagrams, but part of the idea was to help educate newbies to what’s what regarding their menu items… Thanks for your compliments, too.

JDM – Thank you too for the compliments. The reason for the single Sushi chef was that he is the owner. Most everyone who comes in gets that because he’s totally on top of making sure the customers are taken care of. Good point, though, maybe it could have been made more obvious. It may have been nice to highlight some of the other chefs like you said, too…

The point on the music is also well taken. It probably could change up a bit.

Thanks again everyone for the comments. I appreciate the criticism!

Well, not exactly a promo piece…but it’s turning into one for them.

I originally pitched it as a video to play on their flat screen TV to educate their customers about menu items and let them see what’s happening behind the sushi bar, which is not always visible. We also wanted to let them know why sushi is better there. We tied it into their 2nd year anniversary, so it worked out well for them.

The reason I say it’s turning into a promo piece is that we’re going to link to the youtube video in the next e-mail newsletter…

Chief,

YUMMY!
Don't know where your located, but if your in L.A. go down to Venice by the sea and located on the "Circle" (across from the post office) is Hama Sushi. The best I've ever tasted.
Your video worked for me, makes me want to get some right now. Although being located in inland Oregon makes the concept a bit teriffying!

Hi Chuck,

Too bad, but I'm not in LA. I do have relatives there, though, so maybe next time I head out there. That sounds really good, I will check into it.

Thanks for the compliments! Yeah, not too sure about inland Oregan sushi, myself. Could work, though...after all, this place is in Cincinnati...

The overall video looks great. If anything, I'd have to agree, some of the shots look a little flat, could have used better lighting. In hindsight, shooting at night with a good light kit might have added to the overall vibe.

I really like the motion graphics. I'm sure your client was happy.

BTW, location shouldn't really matter with sushi. The good places fly that fish in fresh from Japan. Oregon, NYC, Ohio....distance is relative.

Thanks for the compliments and suggestions.

I love this idea, but the big problem with lighting, or taking over the restaurant at night was that this place is open 7 days a week until 11 every night. I wouldn’t personally have a problem with setting up after that, but I think they didn’t want to prep all that food just for this shoot. Plus there was no budget for lighting rental…I would have been great to have been able to set up each shot but it just wasn’t in the cards this time.

As far as location, I do know that these guys fly their fish in from NY. The owners uncle personally selects the fish from a market there…tasty!

Thanks for commenting!

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes you have to work within certain confines.

Now I want some sushi.

"Now I want some sushi."

Me too! I actually ate really well while I was doing this work...I got really spoiled - now I'm back to paying for it...

Thanks again for the constructive criticism!

Thats not a bad idea....whenever I'm getting hungry, i should just go shoot some "promo work" at a fancy restaurant....they wont even have to know that theres no tape in the camera....
