Surveyor 25 min short film

Congratulations Clyde.

You made both cameras fly.

That would be about the best exterior work I have seen from an AF100 and the conditions would have been very challenging. eg contrast and highlights etc.

Very impressive work ...and I was also really gripped by the film as well.

Thanks much Shooter! I learned quite a bit from the camera and lighting in general from reading your posts

Well you learnt well then ..and you nailed it.

Your exposure control was masterful and I bet the colorists and film graders were delighted to work with your stuff.

Camera work , framing and composition also stood out for me.

Will look at your film again later tonight. ( Just off to see Les Mis....)

This is very nice. What kind of kit did you have to work here? Like lenses, recorder? Did you use cinelike D gamma? Any special scene file? Looks very professional.

Nice. All available light? Did you use bounce cards?

For me it looks like you have more GH2 there than AF100. But may be just impression.

Sorry, but I have to ask few more questions. I watched the film a few times now and is really impressive! I think this is the best AF100 images I ever saw that were shot in direct sun light. It has no blown high lights. Every AF100 clip I see has blown high light some where. This doesn't. I know how hard it is to avoid bad high lights because I have AF100 too. Your work here is very impressive.
I think GH2 shots a quite easy to see. They look sharper and cleaner and less magenta. But all shots of the film look great.

Did you add grain in post? Some shots have grain in bokeh.

Any filters beside NDs? Black Promist perhaps or other diffusion or color filter?

Was his hands dirtied to solve high lights problems? If so very smart idea. Hands are big problem in sunny days. I think hats also help very much avoid bad high light on forehead. They are almost impossible to avoid with AF100.

Did you fly silks to break harsh sun light?

This is my guess for some shots:

Very first shot-AF100
1st notebook insert-AF100
07:00 Wide shot of them talking-GH2
08:15 Guy points gun at him close up-GH2
13:02 crane down- AF100
15:33 Looking at the distance- AF100
15:50 Close up of boots walking in cabin- for sure AF100

Am I close? :)

But the film looks really nice. The way you controlled high lights, if you didn't have full lighting kit with crew and things like HMI for fill and silks to diffuse sun, you are a hero or a magician. Mad props!
Never saw so good AF100 images here or anywhere. Most AF100 footages look like ugly video. Like interview or soap opera footages. This looks like film.

Thanks for taking the time and checking it out. In general the first 5 minutes and the last 7 minutes is af100. Everything in between is gh2, save for the waterfall scene.

To answer your questions- We used simple reflectors and bounce. No we didn't dirty his hands specifically for camera exposure. I used simple NDs no other filters. As far as I know grain was not added.

For me personally an EVF is a must have outside. I've burned 3 of them though :(

I do know what you are saying with the af100. It does have a bit of a video look. However I think it's more of a function of the person making the images.

IMO I think many people place a little too much importance on the camera. We could have shot this on lots of different cameras and it would have looked roughly the same. Try this, the "soap opera" footage you mention- imagine if it was shot exactly the same but with an Alexa. Would it really look all that much better? probably not

So I was not very off. :)

So opening sequence before title and the dusk shots after are AF100, then you switch to GH2 and then you pick it up again with AF100 from 15:48 when he comes in the cabin with the shot of boots walking in over sunny floor? Is this it?

Some shots were really easy to tell was GH2 because almost not possible with AF100.

But I'm curious why use 2 cameras? If you shoot multi camera ok. But if shoot cameras separately, why 2 cameras?

Because the shoot was split and you couldn't get the same cameras?

Because you knew AF100 wouldn't be good for those shots you used GH2?

Because you started with AF100 at first and then changed to GH2 because you realized it would be too difficult to do all with AF100?

What happened?

Camera is not all but is very important. If you shoot this with NTSC SD interlaced camera it looks like crap even if your cinematography is so good.

We could have shot this on lots of different cameras and it would have looked roughly the same.

Have to disagree. Sure you could shoot with any camera. But that shot at 07:00 with the 2 men talking would look very soft and almost out of focus with AF100.

Not sure about Alexa. But if shot 35mm film it would not look like a soap at all.

Nothing special, old Nikon prime lenses for the most part and a 11-16 tokina. We shot this about a year and half ago I don't recall exactly but I'm pretty sure I shot cine v. No external recorder

Ah, I see that you or the people you work with shot the Studio Now how to series. I watched a couple of the videos a while back. I've done just a handful of business profiles through them. Nothing too exciting, but it's good work, especially when a lot come in at the same time. They're good folks to work with.
