14/08/11 UPDATE: It's finally done...

SURRENDER - A short film by Paul Robinson

(will be doing a new poster once i take some stills during the shoot)

This one's been a long time coming, I first had the idea for this around 4 years ago but didn't have a camera. It's
what I want to do with my life (movie making that is) and I now have a camera (t2i) to do it, so I'm diving right in.

Location & The Shoot

We're filming this on a large island near where I live, it only has a few roads on it and they're low traffic so we should be able to film fairly uninterrupted. Filming has been delayed a few times (we were originally set to go on the 7th of April) due to equipment not arriving on time, but we are now good to go for this Sunday.

I did do some "location scouting" of sorts with google street view, and these are the basic areas we'll be filming in and around

I'll update this some more after Sunday with a report on how the filming went.

Trailer

Now I threw this together when I got home, the cut probably won't be the same in the final short and the music will likely be different too. I just did a simple grade on the footage (hadn't converted it to 10bit yet, so this was just done on 8bit stuff), added some contrast and swung the highlights to a blue and the shadows to an orange. It mightn't be the final look I'll go with but I think it adds a vintage-y sort of feel to it...

Filming Report
We were a little late getting started this morning (planned start of 9:30am ended up being 11:00am), but we headed out and got to filming straight away. Aside from that the day went as planned, a few technical hiccups here and there, and not every shot was gotten (some were consolidated), but I was happy with how it went. It was a bit exhausting, but I'm a bit unfit so thats probably why...lol

Now for the things that were a bit hiccuppy, they were mostly rookie type mistakes that were due to it being my first time doing something properly with my camera.

- a few exposure issues, which I should have expected with the white shirt
- i missed focus a few times (more than a few even), but i dunno, it sort of adds a quality to it....
- i completely forgot to take stills throughout the day, i think because we were in a rush they got forgotten
- the location worked out a bit different than i'd hoped...i hadn't been out there myself for a few years and only had street view to go on when planning....but i think it worked out....some proper location scouting will be done for future shorts....
- there was one shot (not in the trailer or screens) that was quite washed out....it was inside the car, and i think i messed something up with the exposure....but i'm hoping i'll be able to fix it up....
