GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

- Improved 1080P @ 96K ... seems like this should be doable, and would be appreciated. Not gonna knock anyone's socks off, though. Such a boring feature it's probably true.

- 60fps @ 4K ... I'd be so happy I'd poop myself. That would really kick the competition in the crotch. Really have to wonder if the processors have the oomph to pull it off, and if the body could disperse the heat.

- Internal Compressed Raw ... Doesn't seem very likely. Panasonic has always been a stickler for only recording to major standards, and there is no real standard for compressed RAW. (I guess CineDNG is the closest.)

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for internal recording @ 10bit 4:2:2. This seems eminently doable using the codecs they already support and would provide a huge amount of real world benefit without the added complexities of a RAW workflow.

Whatever they do - it would just make a very good camera a little (or a greater) bit better. If they would really implement what some hope, it would also mark a different approach by Panasonic concerning upgrades if I am right. Nice. Wait and see.

Impossible for internal RAW, maybe a better codec for internal.

This is demonstrably untrue considering you can get raw out of a 5Dmk2 and a Blackmagic pocket camera. How is it not feasible that a GH4 isn't capable of it?

Of course its not impossible since already now you can get 12fps RAW out of it.
But on the other hand one must think about the economics, it would be more efficient for Panasonic to feature raw 24/30 recording in the next GH.

Not really. With pressure from A7S (High ISO, good DR, S-Log2), a $500 Blackmagic Pocket, and the rumoured 4K/HFR 1080P/Log E-M1 firmware update, the time for Panasonic to compete is now. Whether they'll be able to stand out from the crowd is another story. 4K 60FPS might do it - I think having internal 10-bit in a film-log profile would be a wiser thing to release though. We'll know in a few hours or so.

I know we're guessing about a lot of things... If they enable some flavor of RAW, do you think it'd make the image more appealing for those not impressed with it as is?

Perhaps. I think RAW is intimidating to many that are not familiar with how to process RAW video. I think a true 10-bit colour-space and a film-log (and 4K @ 60FPS, if it's possible) is more appealing than RAW. If they could do 10-bit 4K up to 60FPS in a film-log, they'll win over many hearts.

Exactly. That is what we really need: some proper colour science, some nice log profile and 10 bit would do the job. Or just give us RAW if that'll be to much development for you. I'm not really fussy about the rest.

If there is 12-bit RAW output, it will contain more dynamic range than 10-bit compressed output. The files size will be huge, but RAW will be the only way to get the maximum dynamic range out of the camera. That's just mathematics.

And the rumor is that the Firmware update will come with a warning from Panasonic that says: Whoever is not happy with it just don't download it and install it.
