surge__motion graphics piece using DVX

"Surge" is a short motion graphics piece created by my design shop, Syndrome Studio as part of an art installation and in-store display. All of the live-action footage of the model and the shoe were shot on the DVX, with still photography shot on a Canon EOS10D. We also shot tons of light and water elements to use in the compositing.
3D elements were then created in Maya and everything was finessed, edited, and composited in After Effects.

go here to see it:

you can also see the 4 large printed panels that we did for the show. We displayed these panels surrounding the video screen.

this was the first time i had used my DVX on an actual gig and was very happy with it. I love this camera. Although we tweaked the footage substantially, the raw shots look awesome, even with the less than perfect lighting.

Man great stuff Alpha...

What did you use for the light streaking... was that actually shot or digital?

Re: surge__motion graphics piece using DVX

Very creative work on the web site, very well done. Yes how did you get some of the effects?

Re: surge__motion graphics piece using DVX

there is a quicktime.

i guess the streaks were made with Trapcode 3D stroke in AfterEffects. Very nice compositioning alpha!

Re: surge__motion graphics piece using DVX

thanks everyone for the kind words. very encouraging. yes, there is a link to the quicktime at the top above the frames.

the lights were a combination of digital and shot elements. some of them were nurbs shapes created and animated in Maya. these were then brought into AE to tweak the overall look and to add blur and glow effects. some were long-exposure still photos from the Canon of light streaks and trails that were distorted and animated in AE. some was abstract light stuff shot with the DVX, like out-of-focus lights, flares, shining flashlights and laser pointers into the camera, etc. lastly, some were made in AE with plugins like 3d stroke, fe lens, etc. the vast majority of the plug-ins used were simple blurs (mainly tinderbox), mixed with the standard AE distortion plug-ins like mesh warp, displacement map, bezier warp, etc.
The plug-ins obviously help to bring everything together, but could only take us so far. the most important phase of this project was building and collecting a ton of assets (video, still photos, 3d stuff, etc.) to use in the piece before we begin. With strong elements to work with, it was less about relying on plug-ins and more about using them to compliment what was already there.
