Supported OS System

Hi...I'm finally going to break down and spend the bucks to buy media composer. I notice on the Avid website that it "supports" Win XP Pro, or Vista Business. Do other OS's work? I have "XP home" already on my PC (which meets the Avid specs in every other criteria) Do I need to upgrade to XP Pro or Vista?

Also, does media composer work with Quad Core? Just wondering about future upgrades for my PC.

Thanks

Yes. Only use XP Pro 32-bit (Service Pack 2...SP3 is not approved yet) or Vista Business 32 or 64 bit. I prefer XP Pro.

Yes, it works with Quad cores. What are the exact specs of your system?

Michael.

My current set-up is a Core 2 Duo 2.66GHz, 3 gig RAM, Nvidia Quadro 570.

I guess I'd have to also add 1 more gig of RAM to run it on Vista? Would an upgrade to a Quad Core processor make much difference? How about additional RAM or a newer video card? Anything else to make media composer run better?

64bit allows the application to address more RAM. 32 tops out at 3GB for the application. If you are planning on long and complex seqeunces in a shared multi-system environment, the 64bit is a nice option to have.

The problem with 64 bit is that there are some decks and drives that don't have the proper drivers to run properly. Eventually the drivers will become available. I'd make sure all your gear will work on Vista/64 bit before jumping in head first.

Can you even buy XP Pro anymore? (or an upgrade from Home?) I can't find it on the microsoft website...they just cram Vista at you...

Actually you can get it right from Microsoft for less. We just got a XP Pro for our Mac and becuase we had installed it the maximum number of times we had to get a new license and the license was $149 + tax = $156. Not bad.
