anyone recommend a decently priced set of support rods for mounting a mattebox and still being able to shoot on the shoulder? TIA

Zacuto Light Weight Support (LWS) will do the trick.
You don't have to necessarily use the grips and all. But you should definitely check out this as a potential solution.
For around $850 you can get a setup with 8" rods... a quick release Z-mount so you can mount any Zacuto accessory including their arms. It enables you to use your toe-mount plate if you have one. And it also enables you to keep the shoulder functionality.
